I layed this down the other day with amplitube to remember the idea...sure it needs tweaking ...but is it horrible?...i dont think so....you be the judge.

Now see, I think that sounds pretty good but if you told me you recorded that in your garage and it was an amp/speaker/mic/pre signal chain, I'd call you a liar. Just because I don't see any one of us here getting that kind of sound at home. Not sure if it would be possible in a multi-million dollar studio. It sounds fake to me. Good, just not a real guitar and amp.

But he does lack skill. He's got acres of great feeling in his music, but actual technique? Sorry, but he just doesn't have much.

He's got more technique than you've shown. I heard you run the same blues scale over and over. That's some technique you got there

Dunno, probably something to do with the lack of skill.

What The fuck are you on about? Santana, Lack of skill....you Tool. Have you actually ever listened to Santana? I bet all you have ever heard is Black Magic Woman and that shit song he did with Rob Thomas. Go back to bed, you Arse faced Weasel.

Now I don't know (or care) what anyone else thinks - but I thought that sounded pretty darn nice.

Yes, that tone and layering suits the recorded material. I'm not in my control room, but I just cranked the song on my LCD monitor speakers, and with the song loud, you can definately hear the 'digitalness' of the guitars (and the drums distort quite a bit). - this is an MP3@128 - perhaps AMRA can let us in on how he processed the guitars ..

All in all, it is how it sounds to you, and how it translates to other systems. Like others have posted, the general listening public won't pick out the virtual amp.

But I do think it valuable to any engineer (studio or home) to be able to mic and capture a useable tone from a miced speaker (given its good gear, good tuning, good player etc.), as this will definately come up in future recordings.

Cheers,

Oh yeah 100% agreed. If I COULD mic an amp - I would. Don't get me wrong.

What's wrong with his technique?

And who rates a guitarist based on technique more than the emotion they put into their playing?

Some people may be able to shred through scales at 300bpm but I'd rather hear a musician play with emotion over someone with perfect technique any day.

What's wrong with his techinque is that he doesn't have any. And I don't rate guitarists on technique only, and not feeling. I did mention that he puts a lot of feeling into his playing. I'm in the mood for either one sometimes: speed or emotion. Just depends on my mood.

I didn't say I was a better guitarist than Santana. You obviously haven't listened to anything but the link I put up for a VJ sample, but I forgive you for being too lazy to check up on things before you talk.

Yes, Santana, lack of skill. Yes, I've listened to Santana, and of course I've heard more than just those two songs. Saying 'fuck' and 'arse faced weasel' doesn't make you cooler, it just throws your overreaction into starker relief. I've got three Santana albums, and I appreciate what Santana's done in music, and I really do like some of his music, but he's not a technically skilled guitarist.

Ok, so enlighten me, in fact enlighten us all. What makes a "technically skilled guitarist"? Is there a benchmark of Technical skill that we must reach in order for us to become "technically skilled" ? If so, what is it...who would you consider to be amongst the chosen few to be considered "technical"?

Your still an arse faced weasel

A technically skilled guitarist would be one with more technique than your average twelve-year-old.
