home recording is my things, but i'm trying to figure out samples/beats/etc...to start making beats for some people i record (most often = rap). But they come to me with the worst beats i've ever heard in my life. haha. So i really just want to get into making the beats for them too...i imagine like the neptunes..HA!

any ideas?

i got fruity loops 4...and some random sample cd's (mostly drums). some TITE horn samples....but they last forever, and it's a pain to cut each one to tailor to each song i want- man o man...haha...

i dont know, what should i be doing? i got the ideas, and the musical knowledge, but i'd like it to be a little easier....

holla

...then book time in a studio and let the engineer worry about the technical aspects -- you just handle the creativity!

i am the studio my man.....ha recording is no problem.
it's making the beats that is.
and I want to make the beats...so I can do BOTH for my rap gr\oups that come in to record! ha. it's a diy operation

If making good beats was really simple then no one would be trying to sound like the Neptunes because everyone would be as good as the Neptunes. The reason everyone wants to sound like them is because they don't understand how they get their sounds, when in reality, they get their sounds from trying to do their own thing and not try to do things "properly".

In fact I would venture to say they have a more difficult time making beats that you are right now because they may even mic up a kick and snare once in a while to get the EXACT sound that they hear.

No pain no gain.

Hmmmm, you seem eager to get into the game of hiphop/rap/ producing. Like dude said, you dont focus on trying to sound like something, but its good to use "references". I will listen to a Dre, Em, Neptunes, Timberland, what ever kinda beat to get a vibe, even my old ishhh. jus to motivate me. You will be surprized at what you can come up with jus by getting a little inspiration. Some of my older produced beats have no direction, but my newer instrumentals keep getting better with every stroke of the key. Listen to a the type of style you wanna produce, vibe off of it. and try and not be a copycat, LOL. Just be you. And when some body gives you feedback, :"in a constructive manner", listen to em. What helps me get the beat going is the mood Im in, know what Im sayin, if your pissed off, put some sharp stringy synths in there, if your laxed, lay some mellos piano in, if you jus dont G.A. F., do some off the wall music you may think sucks, but to a mass crowd are like, damn, did he do that................

My opinion, no matter what you do, people are going to say, "Oh, that sounds like such and such's beat, or song, dont fret, jus keep doin ya thing..." Thats what I do, me. pM, the second member of the "beat off"

I aint nothin close to an amature pro, but I feel what I hear. Peace, pM

Ive made a hand full of beats, dope beats to me anyway, jus by messin around on the keyboard, or jus takin a lame beats and started tweaking with fxs and you will be surprised what you come up with. Another idea might be to sample human sounds or a type of chat so to speak and build an instrumental around it. I am still struggling with the mix of some of my beats such as eqing, getting the bass to sound fuller, and just getting more of a stereo sound out of my beats, but other than that, its all good. Just 1/2 a pennies worth of advice....hollah....

pms, anyone own, have worked with, or know who owns an mc909. Thats what I am currently using, I didn really get much luv outta the Roland forum....peace.

start trying to make beats with fruity loops, then slowly move up to the real thing.

I dont know what your budget is or if your trying to add anything to your studio at all. I dont use the computer at all so I wouldnt be any help there. I use a MPC 2000xl, Ensoniq ASR-10, (both which would make your sample editing a whole lot easier) and a Fostex VF-160 to record and master. Im just getting into mastering though. But anyways if you ever get any of this equipment I would be glad to help you. Heres my page some of the beats were done by me YungPoke and some by my brother Yesir. Some are with Asr10 only some are with MPC only and some are with both. We have beats to purchase to for $75 so if you or your group want to go that way just holla.
