...and it turns out they've been around all the time, but just not stocked near here until recently.

Vic Firth "Jazz Brushes" heavy gauge wires, full spread, heavy duty cases and retractable.

I've been complaining for a few years about the quality of the brushes that are being made by the other companies, all wussy with thin gauge wires that are real short with no action. I've had to heavily mic up the snare from top and bottom to get any sweeps.

So far this is the only company that I've seen that's making brushes the way they used to.(about $15.00 a pair) They (Vc Firth) make two kinds, the standard common wussy variety that comes in a black handle and the more usable manly "Jazz Brushes" that come in a white handle (shouldn't the colors be the other way around?) ;)

I thought I'd share, in case there are any of you that have been searching also.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip!
My brushes are the wuss variety, and are so frazzled they wont retract any more or play with any snap. I'd like to try the "white handled wonders" myself. I have recently switched over to vic firth 5As and love them, so the I can see how their other products would be good.

Thanks rim, I'm on my way to get a pair now! I will get back with you on how they perform.

You should have just asked what other people were using - :p

I've been using these for quite some time. Congrats!

Uh...okay, so I guess you already know about the Evans new etched head for snares then too? :o
I only found out about this one the other day, bought one, tried it out with my new brushes, and now I have to turn my snare mic down in volume. It responds so well to sticks an brushes and unlike the Coated Ambassadors which I had preferred for years, it doesn't seem to get blackened from being swept by the brushes.
I'm finally getting good sound with brushwork without having to work so hard at it, yay!

Actually yeah...saw it in Modern Drummer a while back...

:D

Is it Ambassador weight?

OH YEAH??!
Well have you heard about the new DW 6 piece kit that can fold up into one suitcase??

NO?

No, me neither. :D :)

It's difficult to say on the weight of the Evans J1 etched. I think it's actually a bit heavier than the coated ambassador but beause it doesn't have the coating, it's not dampened as much and is very responsive. You'll just have to try it. Fortunately, it's not expensive like the specialty heads are. About the same price as ambassadors where I shop.

Yeah, I'll have to check it out.

One the subject of heads, have you tried anything by Attack? Their prices are VERY attractive. I've been looking at the Terrio Bozzio signature line. Really interesting looking with a collar that comes up the side of the head...supposed to be somewhat bongo-head-like and facilitate better head/bearing edge contact.

I think I'm done with Remo and all that cracking of the lip straightening out against the bearing edge.............

letterq,
I've read when you mentioned
Attack heads before here and I've seen them mentioned in drum magazines, but I've never seen them in any of the retailers that I use around here (Long Island/NYC area). These heads could possibly be the "bee's knees" but I think I'd have to order them to find out.
