Finally getting to it on the monitors....

I think it sounds really good overall. Levels are great. Low end is tight and controlled. I think maybe the middle/lead guitar is a little upper-midrangey. It gets to the ears a little bit when cranked. Everything else is pretty awesome. Well done. :)
Thanx a lot man. Yeah, it's a bit of a piercing sound. I'll sweep through the upper mids and find what needs to be tamed next time I visit the mix for this. I'll let it sit for a few days without listening to it so I can attack it with fresh ears in a few days.

Damn, man...this is really good. I had to hop on and ask about the rhythm guitars. Are they 12-string electrics or just layered 6-strings? I really like that sound. And I love how lively they sound, the guitars just jump out at me and sound like I'm in the room. I'm struggling with that in my own mixes recently. Multi-mic setup, or just a dynamic right on the speaker grill?

I'm listening on the ultimate high-fidelity setup: integrated laptop speakers. Actually, this can be a good test for a mix. If it sounds good on these tinny things, it must be a well-balanced mix (at least from about 250Hz and up). And this one definitely passes. The snare is a little dry for my tastes but it works in this context. I'll have to give this one a listen on my monitoring setup so I can hear the full spectrum. Good job, man.

Hey, thanx a lot man (or woman) :)

It's just a Fender Strat double-tracked. I'm going into a Fender Super Champ X2, using the "Mesa Boogie Rectifier" pre-set, with a 57 right up against the grill about halfway between the cone and the edge of the speaker.

Thanx for the listen and comments.

I just had another listen on actual monitors and it sounds great to my ears. The guitars just sparkle, I love it. The SCXD sounds terrific on those rhythm guitars.

Oh, and man is correct :)

OK dude. :D

Yeah, it's the X2, not the XD. I'm not sure what the difference is, if any. I'm mainly a drummer so I'm not up on guitar gear that well. Glad it still sounds good on the monitors. Thanx.

Great drum track!........ Smack in the centre. Maybe consider opening it to blend with everything else.
If you meant it to sound that way,, then it's also fine. All other levels are just fine, including the vocals.

I really enjoyed this one, the mix and in particular the sounds and tones are fantastic. The guitars and your vocals are ear candy, which really confirms yours and Greg's statements about pre-production. I like the song a lot too, cool lyrics and melodies/harmonies. I wasn't satisfied by the last line in the choruses though, I would probably keep trying to find something that worked better there, just didn't flow for me. I didn't see anyone else mention that so FWIW. The only other thing was that opening guitar line sounds really close to McGuinn's on "So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star", maybe intended but I thought it was funny someone thought that should be a cleaner 12-string sound. Really great job again, inspires me to try harder.

Thanx a lot. The drums are stereo, actually. You'll hear that the hi-hats are a little to the right and the cymbals are not dead centre. But I can see how it would sound like the drums are up the middle considering the song is mostly kik and snare and those are both dead centre.

Thanx for the listen and comments.

Thanx a lot. You might be right about the chorus not resolving with as much as a payoff as you would have liked. Writing those catchy hooks that really grab you is not my forte. I appreciate you mentioning it though.

As far as the " So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star" that you mentioned, it never crossed my mind until you mentioned it. At first I thought that the opening riff is nowhere close to that tune, then I heard the lead come in and realized the first few notes are very close and it has the same feel to it. Totally not deliberate, but it must have been sub-concious because it is pretty close. Oh well, that lead line's a tribute. :D

Thax a lot.

Thanx alot Steen. I don't deliberately keep my vocals low, but it probably just happens that way since it's usually my least favorite part of my tunes.

Geez, man, that is a really "clean" sound to my ears -- nice playing. As for vocals, I'd trade my voice for yours without a second thought -- you got nuthin' to sweat there. . .

I'd probably bring up the vocals just a bit, and also the harmony parts (are they doubled?). Even so, it's great work!

-----------

Sometime later that day. . .

Oh, I see that you already did that. Good result! Nice song.
