I am new to it all, and I can wait to record, but....

Hi all :)

Me and the old man, my father, have been building our home studio for the last 6 months and almost finished!!! This is so exciting. Well we have accquired an Ampex 1100 (24 Track w/ a 16 head stack), Dolby A noise reduction unit, Soundcraft 5000, Mackie Studio Monitors, 2 DBX patchbays, dbx compressor/gate, ampex ATR, 2 1950'ish pre's by ampex, otari pre, lot's of different mics for guitar, drums, vocals (no neumanns yet), bass, and blah blah blah.

So what else does anyone else think we should get, what might be a must have?

Actually, I will be recording the two bands I am in right now, soon. Then gong to the recording workshop in Ohio next spring.

That is some very high grade shit. what else do you need? you need microphones out the waazoo. basic tracking mics - sm57s, 421s, sm81s, kick mic of preference. then specialist large and small diaphragm condensors... and i think you might be interested in a matched pair of royer ribbon mics. they are new and handle HIGH SPLs, like most dynamics.
 
that is some nice gear u got there zach.. but what about monitoring in the studio for the muso's... ie. headphones.. and an amp to run several sets? the behringer powerplay pro is quite good and fairly cheap.. its a four channel but takes upto 12 sets of cans...
hey zach im looking at getting into something a little smaller, but i was wondering what you would be looking at charging? and how much do u think you've spent already ? must be a shitload eh???
 
Think of the little things...fireproof metal cabinets for reels, music stands, benches, chairs, seats...whatever...lots of mic stands, acoustic treatments, good quality cabling, clean power...big locks on the doors if you are doing it out of your home :) reel to reel maintenance equipment (head cleaner/demag/rubber cleaner...whatever), plenty of reels (charge clients for them)....

We, my pop's and I, have spent over 10k so far on building materials, recording materials, etc...

For charging, we are thinking maybe $50 to 75 per hr.

What is the going rates these days?

microphones.

I think If you arent looking to really spend too much more on mics you have to atleast get a stereo pair small condensors. Sm81s, or MC012s. they are higher quality then the mics mentioned. if you ahve more go up to some Neuman small sdiaphragms. And then you need a couple large diaphragms. AKG414, AT4050, TLMs, etc.. atleast $2000 of higher quality mics.
