The vocal sounds good on both but i rather the "verbed" one......it just fits the song and vibe better.......if the Lord had intended us to record dry vocals, he wouldnt have given us Lexicons......

well, I used "Lexicon" just as an example....it really depends on which Lord you worship, the quality of reverb unit you get......mine gave me Waves plugins......the Lexicons are more for the Southern Baptists......of course the Jehovahs Witnesses just go door to door looking for reverb units to recruit......the Amish mic their water well to get reverb the old fashion way (the depth of the water controls the amount of veb)......the Catholics get that nice big church reverb but of course it isnt very portable and if you have younger boys in the band, you have to keeping beating the priest off of them (did i say beat off?!!).......

You have the perfect voice for this kind of stuff. I agree with flat-9 on the "seasoned" thing. I like it.
You don't sound as much like Seger without the effects.
That's a good thing.
I think you need a different mic though. While that one doesn't sound bad, it doesn't compliment your voice. I think you need something brighter & cleaner.

Like a lot of others, I'm sure--there a WHOLE LOT MORE I'd like to be doing with recording. Writing, experimenting and trying to get to the next level, whatever that is. A few comments-
Lt. Bob--Yeah, its dry as a bone! Man, I am losing my mind. I can't remember if I used the V93 or the AT 4033, but I THINK the V93. Yes, it WAS. Its coming back. Well, they say memory is the second thing to go....
Scottboyer--Maybe the lack of verb is a good thing, but I'm like you--I want to swim in that stuff!
Gidge--you have way more recording skills than you may know. If you can get a Pacifica so sound so sweet through a modeler, you have something I WISH I had. I've never liked one modeled guitar track and I've played through 'em all. Just another thing I need to dive into more.
flat-9--too many whiskeys and smokes! between that and singing six nights a week, my voice is actually a wreck right now. I'm gonna get Roto-Rooter to snake it out or something. Or, gee...maybe cut the habits and get my sorry ass healthy again!

I think that with PERFECT mic technique and placement, I could actually go this way more often, but I still have some experimenting to do. Lord, I just need more time!

Those old studios used to use a speaker in a tank or room and mic the speaker for their reverb. The board would send right to a power amp and speaker and the mic would be a distance from the speaker, picking up the reflections from the tank. I was hoping to get that, but I got something else!
M. Brane--I've been searching for the right mic for me. I've had great results with several on SOME things, but then bad results too. My throat is raspy right now and I seem to have developed a supreme sibilance that I'm always fighting. Grrr....again, I need more time to dial things in.

I LOVE the dry vocal sound, Crawdad. If you ever decide to ditch the fx, you got at least one fan left (ok, a silly dutch boy...perhaps that doesn't count )

It's great. What would be good now, I think, would be a great bluesy string arrangment, then maybe a little ambience over the whole thing (good ambience... I think that's the one thing that is really impossible in home recording, is not having those rooms and chambers that studios have, but maybe Samplitude and SIR will figure it out somewhat for us virtual types), and then master it and press it!

Sometimes I think we all add too many effects,and do too much processing.
Mabey one of the lesson learned from this exercise is,less is more.

I havent read back all of the responses to this, so i hope im not redundant.
....first off, I LOVE the uncompressed and dry vibe of the vocals during the verses. It seems to give it its own effect that sounds very intentional. ...very intimate.
Re: the -12 thingy, Ive done a little experimentation w/ that myself, and I think i understand why its useful in a situation where you boost the gain in your compression. Im not sure its a good "blanket" thing to do in all tracking because of lost resolution that would occur when not using alot of gain, but definitely a cool thing to use when a person intends to boost the gain later.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you sound a bit like Elvis here and there. In a good way of course. He's the man.
Laidback song. Not really my style but I wouldn't change the channel if this was on the radio. Vocals sound like they are in a different place compared to the rest of the mix. Maybe it's that echo/reverb. I'd use more reverb on the snare since this has room for it, being a slowie. No other mix comments. Song works and I suppose it's good for its style. I wouldn't know too much.

This was obviously no real challange to you as far as instraments go.The vox sounds a bit "coffee canish".You are truely a great song writer.This is real top notch music.As good as anything I've heard from the lame ass radio.This could seriously become mainstream counrty/rock cross over-ish type rythm and blues.Like Bad Company and Stevie Ray.Uh-oh...that ride sounds crappy/fake.Mix is fine,fine,fine.Great lyrics,too.Nice job.
