seems like a nice song. BUT!!!...it was EXTREMELY OVER compressed, and it smashed all the dynamics, considerably raised the noise floor, and was distorted to boot. That unfortunately ruined it for me to listen past 30 seconds or so.
 
hmmmm....

Are you sure your speakers arn't goofy? I've played it on like 10 different sources and it's sounded fine on all of them. Now I'm confused. Anyone else getting this problem?

Confirmed.A lot of compression happening as soon as the song hits the first note.There is also an awful hiss going on.....it sounds like the threshold settings on the compressor/limiter raised the noise level.The vocals dont sound like they were treated with the same amount of compression/limiting as the music tracks though.

Listen closely as the song ends and you will hear that high level of hiss that is audible to me throughout the entire song.

Nice catchy tune though.I remember this from when you first posted it.

Yes.. there is a lot of compression on this tune. (which brings in a lot of "white noise") It gets a little distorted, but not too much. The tune is decent.. good mix too.. but I agree aboot the heavy compression. (especially on the primary guitar.. you can actually "hear" the attack on the compressor as it squelches the life oat of the guitar... :) )

but that's an effect issue.. that can easily be remedied.. unless your compressor was hardware.. in which case... oh well... :p

I think your voice would sound better if you didn't double it,mabey just on the chorus?

Mabey you recorded it too loud also,I'm guilty of this myself sometimes.

You always hear about raising the levels to the max to lower the noise floor,dosn't work for me.
I'm finding with digital,a clean input and moderate levels work much better,you don't have to worry about hiss,like with tape.

Ya. I kinda here it. I think I just thought it was a bit of noise from the reverb. I mean come on...is it really that bad? I mean, is it so bad you can't listen to it?

Speaking of which, how would you suggest getting rid of it. Obviously I can't un-compress, but would a de-esser help? What do I cut on the compressor to cut back on that hiss?

Whachya think of the tune aside from the bit of noise?

Any specific help would be great.

The compression/limiting on this song is intense, unnecessary, and distracting.

Other than that, its actually a pretty good song.

well...thanks for the few kind words that were speckled here and there.

Now to the real question. Is there anything I can do without re-recording it, or is it going to hurt everyone's ears unless I do? Also, what can I do to avoid this in the future?

I didn't catch the compression thing quite as quickly as mix did - it took me all the way to the first chorus to notice.

Additionally, I wouldn't hard pan the vocals. I would keep them both down center. As they were I could notice a few synching issues. I think you had one vocal track that sang lead sometimes and harmony sometimes. That kind of reduces your flexibility when mixing. I'd put harmonies on separate tracks.

You have a nice singing voice. I think otherwise the song has a decent feel to it. Although at nearly 5 minutes I thought it needed to have a bit more going on - introducing instruments later on, a bridge, etc.
 
I didn't notice the compression quite as much as some of the others. I think the song is good and a like the guitar both in terms of the recording and the playing. I didn't much like the drum track. The introduction of the snare from rim shot that gives it some dynamic. but its the lack lustre ride cymbal. It doesn't seem to perform any purpose. IMO it would hang together better rhythmically with a hi hat or some percusion (shakers maybe) on the 8ths to give the song some inertia.
Also the vocals were a bit out front at times, I would try and make more of the backing because it sounds like there may be detail there thats not comming out.
This sounds very critical but I think the basic shape and sound is there, dont throw away what you have. You can always re master and change the compression settings
 
I liked this song! It has a good feel to it. You've already heard most of the feedback as far as the mastering goes. The only thing I might add may be to lower the verb a tad, or maybe that was already said. Overall I liked the tune, and you have a good singing voice!

Hey guy...what are you recording on?

If possible, try recording, and for now just leave the compression out the chain of events. A little tape hiss...or whatever isn't usually so bad. But in your case, the compression served to increase the noise....and was really causing the volume changes to be noticeable.

as far as rerecording....isn't it possible to just mix the tracks again, without redoing all the recording over again? Hopefully you just "smashed" the mix only and not the individual tracks.

I didn't mean to come off like the grumpy old man of the clinic, but I usually just rattle off my first impressions. (which sometimes gets ya into a corner!!)

try another mix, if you can. I'm sure I speak for everyone here in that we'd like to hear it.
