I see lots of people (usually rappers) hold the mic up high, cupping their hand over the ball, and others (usually other types of music) holding it low, like (I think) it's supposed to be held. Are there advantages and disadvantages to doing it either way? It seems like cupping the mic that high would cause feedback & maybe distortion when your hand moves on it.

average rapper IQ is not so high. don't cup the mic ;) look to Bono for good mic technique

and how bout how rappers hold pistols....all sideways and crap....then its like they try and throw the bullet out...whats up with that....how can you pop a cap in someones ass like that...no wonder so many drive-bys hit innocent people.....

they cant even pull up their pants or tie their shoes and your looking to them for mic control techniques :p

Hey, leave rappers alone. A lot of them are very intelligent--they just don't get on MTV very often.

Cupping the ball of a cardoid mic makes it behave like an omni. That's why you get feedback.
They do this because they think it looks cool. I think they look like dickheads

I'd like to get my hands on the guy who took the "C" out of rap.

Rap is cool
You stupid fools
It's hard to rhyme
When you didn't finish grade school
boyeeee

cupping the mic is retarded. I absolutely can't stand the sound when people cup the mics because it gives the mic a very midrange sound.

I can honestly say that I wasn't expecting those types of replies to that question. Thanks for the laugh!

You should hold the mic about an inch away from your mouth. This will keep the mic from overloading, but close enough to not get too much noise from the rest of the stage. IF you do hold the mic, remember not to drop the hand holding it to your side while you are not singing; getting the mic too close to the monitors will give the sound man a fit.

You guys have no clue about hip-hop culture, do you...

:)

I mean, it's cool tojoke around, but let's not start anything here. I could go on for hours about how wack I think country and rock are, but hey, let's all just get along. Every genre has a contribution to make, and it's all a matter of personal preference.

One love.

I'd like to know how rock music is more "whack" than rap. Hehe...not trying to start any rap wars though.

Don't wanna get my cap busted by a sideways gatt - boyeee!

(couldn't resist)

I certainly cant hold a mic 1 inch from my mouth on stage. The plosives will be huge. Im just on of those singers who shoot air I guess. Three inches and a little from above works for me...

I dont get how guys like Billy Joel and such do it. Singing extremely loud an articulate and not a single plosive and breath hiss with the mic halfway in the mouth...

b.t.w Maybe you guys should get a "freestyle battle" going :)

Hip-Hop

It's all good, guys. :)

I can see where you're coming from... I mean, mainstream hip-hop is not representative of hip-hop as a whole. The idiots in mainstream hip-hop (i.e. Puff Daddy, Master P, Nelly, Ja Rule, etc.) are a complete shame to the art form, but unfortunately, that's what most people percieve as "real rap."

The true artists (i.e. Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Dead Prez) are what should represent real hip-hop.

Mainstream hip-hop has become so polluted by idiots who go around with their pants hanging down and spitting watered-down lyrics that it's absolutely despicable to me these days.

However, there are some emcees who can maintain artistic integrity and still have mass apeal; Eminem is a prime example of this. You may not like him, and you may not like his lyrical content, but there is no denying that the man has a way with words. He's a poet.

Anyway, that's just how mainstream hip-hop is right now. I'm sure that it's just a passing fad, and I know hip-hop will get back to its roots soon.

Hip-hop started as a music by the people, for the people. It should be used as a voice for the people, political consciousness, and as a vehicle for the betterment of everyone.

The man is right. I used to be like most of you, pooh-poohing rap/hip-hop every chance I got. Then I got a Beastie Boys album that I liked a lot. Then I proceeded to get into the good underground stuff. The kind of stuff where guys will say something that'll make you stop and think 'whoa!' A lot of hip-hop is miles ahead of a lot of rock music. I find the majority of rock music to be stupid and boring. Then again, the majority of music in any genre is that way, I guess.

In any music genre, it is not so much the music as it is the media that make it apear to be what it is. The big corporations have their formulas, so we end up stereo typing each genre (good or bad). There are musicians in each genre I like and dislike. So what we have to do to appreciate a genre of music is to listern to the individual artist and not the image portrayed by the corporations.

wait.... I'm spozed to think for myself???

And I just went and bought the new Creed CD, and I'm so excited that Celine Dion is returning to music, and I think NSYNC are the best thing out there...

NOT!!!!
