how to clean a mic

does anybody know how to clean up the inside of a mic if alot of dust gets into it

I'm no expert but i would say some electrical contact cleaner and a can of compressed air like you would use on a computer keypad would work just fine.

Compressed air might be fine...but Id have doubts about the contact cleaner.

Id take it to a pro...with insureance so if he screwed up...he could replace your mic.

The ammonia and bleach comment was meant as a joke & i'm sure the gasoline remark was as well.I stand by my original advice though.I used this method to clean up an old peavey mixer and it worked just fine.Just to clarify i used a lubricating electrical contact cleaner i got at radio shack.It's great on scratchy souding pots for volume knobs and such.With a can of compressed air you can back it off a bit so you're not blasting the heck out of anything.I might want not want to do this with a $1000 vocal mic but a sm57 or something comparible i wouldn't hesitate a bit.

Compressed air and mic elements don't mix.

I met a guy at a local studio, Thomas McCoy. He invented a foam that you spray on your mic while holding it upside down and it cleans and sanitizes your mic. Fleetwood Mac used it at their last concert in Tampa, FL. I personally haven't tried it but if you want to check it out, go to microphome.com, or contact him at microphome@gmail.com.

i'm really interested in this thread. i recently bought a LDC mic that's OBVIOUSLY been in storage for a while. the inside and outside of the case were VERY dusty, along with the mic itself. i plugged it in and it sounds o.k. but maybe a lil dull? maybe i;m not sure what the mic is SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE NEW but seems like i get just as good, if not more clear, sounds out of much cheaper mics. thought this may be due to dust on the diaphragm.

anyone?
