RAM Happy!

Mates,

I changed computers about six weeks ago:

1999 Dell XPS, P3 750 , 256 RAM, 30 and 80 GB HDs, Win 98SE

to:

2005 Dell 8400, P4 (630) 3.0 GhZ, 512 MB PC3200 and 1 GB 4200 RAM [Runs at the PC3200 speed], 80 and 120GB music files drives, Win XP Home

I'm using the same soundcard from the the P750- an M-Audio 2496. Probably becasue I'm doing simple 2- channel 16 /44.1 recording, I haven't noticed any difference in sound or operation, but my 3-D ArchiCad work is going much better!

Cheers,

Using eMachine with 2.66-GHz Celron-D CPU (Don't laugh :)) with 512MB of PC2700 DDR RAM. Will upgrade to 2Gigs of RAM. Planning to put in a GIG stick by the end of the summer.
Celerons with lots of RAM arent too bad compared to pentiums with little RAM as long as you have A LOT of ram on your celeron it's fine.

im on a celeron M right now but need to upgrade to about 1 GB ram for it to run as well as I would like esp having windows XP.

New bit box ... 3.8 GHz Pentium with HT ... 3 GB ram, 10,000 rpm drive just for audio data. Three sound cards -- the crappy one it came with (disabled), Sound Blaster 24bit, ESI Julia@. I enable or disable cards depending on need.

Still -- my CPU goes through the roof sometimes in Cakewalk.

Gotta figure that one out.

athlon 64 3500+ 2.2ghz (will probably Overclock)
4 gigs ddr 400 pc 3200 Corsair RAM
2 36.7 gig 10,000 rpm drives in raid 0(OS, program files)
4 160 Gig SATA drives for storage
ECS Kn1 extreme motherboard
ESI Juli@ sound card(awesome card!)
Matrox Millennium P650 128MB DDR/PCI-E/Dual-DVI Grafix card
two 17 in flat screen monitors

Wavelab 5
Soundforge 8
WAVES Diamond

Which hard drives are crap from D.R. guy

I have a portable desktop PC that is a couple years old. I use it for data recovery. Not everyone charges a $2500 flat rate. Alot of people are happy when they find out it only cost a couple hundred. The PC is a P4 2.0 ghz (underclocked for integrity and temperature) with a gig of real RAM. I also have an Ultra133 IDE controller card for external drives. It has the fastest data transfer rate of all between IDE, FW, USB whatever. I drain dead drives onsite and get over a gig a minute with IDE write-blocker and 133 card.

As for 2005, the crap drives are definitely IBM/Hitachi. I do more recoveries for Dells than any other PC, and they seem to split the market share about 50-50 with HP. Maxtors are crap, too. I have been buying Seagate only for a couple years now without problem, but they may be crap now, too. I tend to have less failures because I try and keep to the rear of technological advances. A 450 gig external USB drive sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me. External drive enclosures always have the crappiest hard disks in them as it is. A 450 gig one is even scarier.

I agree that IBM deskstar is doodoo. I have 2 gigs pc2700(333 MHZ). I can get 1 gig 3200(400MHZ). would I benefit from going to the faster memory but half the RAM. or is the 2 gig slower one better. I read a review on some grahpics cards that said the faster memory outperformed the slower one even if the slower one had more memory. 128 DDR3 card was faster than the same card of the same brand than the 256 DDR2 card. OK so mabe my PC would be a little faster but do you think having the 2 gigs is better to have.

With higher RAM, you should be able to download and view much more porn while recording and/or mixing simultaneously.

just finally went from 512 to 768

can't tell the difference. :(

My brother built me a two hard drive, two processor two GIG athlon monster. Let's hope my newbie dumbass doesn't screw it up.
