P-4 2.8 Prescott 800mhz FSB with 2 x 512MB DDR333 (Running at 400) no problems so far.

I have an Athlon 3000+ with 1024mb Crucial DDR400 on the way as we speak. It's as close as I'm getting to modern for the next two or three years!!!

P4 2.8 w/1gig 400mhz ram @ the studio

Still AMD 2500+ with 1gig of Crucial. I don't really feel it lagging, so I don't see any sense in going crazy and getting a new motherboard and processor right now.

I might get a 3200+, since they're only like $140 now. But the next major revision I'd like to go to an Athlon 3800+ or 4000+. Actually, I should probably hold out and see how the multicores turn out.

I placed my order ... Dell Dimension 8400 ... P4 3Ghz with 1gb of DDR2 (whatever the hell that means) and a PCI-e graphics card (um ... what?) and 160Gb SATA HDD (ok, I know what that bit is).

Should be here in a week or two. My troubles are over! :)

750MHz Duron 1GB 100MHz in the tower of power

Sempron™ 2600+ 1GB PC2100 in the notebook

My troubles are OVER! Or, at least, my Dell arrived today ... just setting it up now. :)

My new notebook has 2GB, while my desktop has 1GB ram (maxed out already).

I have 3x 80GB HDs, 1x 250 GB external USB/Firewire HD, and 1x 450 GB USB hard drive. Guess I won't be running out of disk space any time soon, and have plenty of backup options (after a baaaaaad crash and loss of all data earlier this year). My advice:

Back up!
Its not a matter of "if", but when your hard drive(s) will crash.

Geezeus!!! Can I send you some files to store? :p

Not that it is necessarily indicitive, but what brand of HD crashed on you? Were you able to recoup any files?

My gawd, that's seemingly redundant! I guess total data loss will do that to you!

Those 8400's look nice. Tell us the details so I might vicariously enjoy a nice 'puter.

What kind of soundcard do you have for it?

I think it was a Westen Digital, but the rate of HD crashes is roughly the same for all major HD companies. In the company I work for we have around 500 computers and one HD crash per month. The recovery rate is 100% if you send the HD to a company which is specialized in data recovery -- but it costs a heck a lot of of money! ($2,500 flat fee), so getting some cheap external USB/Firewire drives is actually an economic solution. Luckily my company paied the fee since I had work-related stuff on my machine *hehe*.

Here's an interesting fact: most HDs crash within the first 3-6 months! So if you think you just bought a computer and you are safe, you are wrong :p

Wow! Holy crap, $2.5k!?! Now is that 3-6 months of being powered up 24/7? My computer is lucky to see 8 hours of operation a week, but both HD's are much older than 6 months by now...

Damn, I'm going to look at a USB drive now...
You can't tell me these things Giga!!!

Any suggestions on a USB drive, and how are their rates of failure?

Finally add a gig (eCorsair 3200) to make it 1.5 on my P4 3.2 HT :)

I have two gigs of ram with no pc to put it in. they were on sale. hope they work when I get the PC.

p4 2.8 800mhz 2 gigs of ram, this one flys

in fact, my p4 1.8 w/1 gig still rules and at a fraction of the cost of a mac...
