you have the The MOSFET (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor), The JFET (Junction field-effet transistor), vari mu are tubes Variable transconductance ("vari-mu", "remote-cutoff" or "super-control") tubes in general are those with a non-uniform grid wire spacing to allow them to handle a wide range of input signal levels without excessive cross-modulation distortion (thanx wiki) Dynamic range compression - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia just read this. You are just naming different types of either voltage/current controlled components. Each have different ways of reacting to changes in voltage/current.

thank you mate!

is the cl1b vari mu and the 1176 MOSFET or JFET?

No idea, Dont know why it is relevant to know unless you want to build it yourself. And in that case look up its schematics

There are also "digtial"...algorithm-based plugs...comps...

...and of course, the original comp, the manual fader ride.

:)
