How important is subject matter in songs ?

All kidding and snappy banter aside, I must ask: what is your "muse"? Where do you draw your inspiration for such prolific song writing?

If you really want to know and arent being sarcastic, I almost never write from inspiration. Im not sure that word is real, i write because I know if I dont write for a while, I lose it fast, it's like exercise, if you stop working out you lose it fast. I dont even know why I keep doing it anymore, Im not making money at it, has to be force of habit. I throw out half the stuff I write, most of it sucks, alot of it doesnt work musically.

I also have lots of musical ideas that never go anywhere either, cause I cant take them anywhere beyond those small ideas.

but it's a numbers game, if you write 10 songs in the next ten days, you might come away with one good chorus! and from the chorus, you start to build around it.

I try to find a basic idea or emotion, and make it into a song. A love song can be a simple I love you, or it can be about some guy living in the 1800's who loves a woman in another state and can only reach her by horseback.

The emotion is the same but the details and the story can be completely different. You can use stories and characters to say things that you dont want to say yourself! if asked, "it's just a song"

Lol. You act like you've cornered the market on all these abstract concepts and ideas, but really, the things you talk about about are rudimentary concepts of writing songs that most people just do naturally without thinking about it. Stories, characters, emotions....why hasn't anyone thought of that before?!?!?! :laughings:

I don't know if this has been mentioned before and if I am being redundant, please bear with with me. I know this will not apply to all styles of music, some is just balls to the walls; but I do believe in certain styles it is important to build an release tension at he proper moments, I believe it to be one of the most important aspects in some genres. Of course, that is an opinion and open to debate, music being as subjective as it is.

Right, so you have learned something, and realized I Speak the truth.

But just like in drums, guitar, piano, there are rudiments, and there's more advanced levels too.

What im saying is whatever you write, you have learned, and you can learn more, if you take the time to do it and practice it.

.

You speak useless shit. Your "truth" is like the sky is blue. The sun is hot. Dogs dig holes. Just basic things that everyone already knows.

Tension and release are big parts of songwriting, both lyrically and musically

There's something called a payoff, a reward to the listener for listening to your song, if a song leaves a person saying "yeah,,, and?" it wasnt a good payoff.

There are all kinds of songs to study this very idea, it could be a line that is kind of like the "moral" of the story, it can be a vocal, it can be a production trick, or a guitar solo, like Pink Floyds "Comfortably Numb" the solo satisfies the listener, many ways to do it, too often today it's done by
production, but the good songs all have something.

You didnt know enough to payoff your walmart song, I told you how it is

As with his past accounts, he's only here to stir the pot and troll. It's mild entertainment and he shouldn't be taken seriously.

You keep trying to convince people of this, but I keep getting pms from people who like what I have to say.

barry, do you actually play with anyone, is there anyone out there who would put up with your shit?

The whole song is how it is. It's perfect in every way because as the author, I deem it so. You don't have to like it. I don't care if you do or don't and didn't ask for your opinion. Your opinion means nothing to me. Besides, I don't follow your or anyone else's rules. Your ideas are formulaic and sterile. Nice try though.

Right, the PM defense. Another page from the troll handbook.

But you DO follow rules, you got a very conventional structure, a very punk harmony in your hook, you tried for a commercial song there, and dont bs me

I write with people all the time, Ive been in bands, but at the time I was more into playing, didnt write much. Did covers and some originals,
but my concept of originals was alot like some of the folks here are saying, I wrote words and music, and that was the song, I didnt know how to
do anything other than that, but i didnt write alot of good songs.
