I have an Otari MX5050 8trk, and I'm looking for a mixer, but I am also going to need to get a hold of some empty reels, and hubs to mount the reels on.

Does anyone know a good source to get these parts?

Also, in the process of selecting a mixer, I would like to be able to record 8 tracks together live. DO I need an 8-buss mixer for this, or can I run a mic straight into the back of the Otari, bypassing the mixer altogether, and running the outputs of the Otari into the mixer? Might be a dumb question, but I gotta ask.

You can plug a mic into a mic preamp and then plug it into the deck. You don't need an 8 buss board, (it's convienient) you can get a board with direct outs or even use aux outputs or inserts.

All I want to do for now is be able to run 2 condensers (which have preamp and phantom power), then 4 dynamics into the recorder at once, 2 OH condensers on the drums, kick, snare, bass, guitar.

The condencers don't have preamps and phantom power, they require preamps and phantom power.

You can do what you want with just about any board, which ones are you looking at?

I have a preamp for the condensers, I have used them on computer recordings and Portastudio recordings. Now I'm jumping up a league.

I'm looking at old-school Tascam mixers, mostly. As long as I can put 8 tracks down on tape simultaneously, I'll be happy. If I need to buy another preamp, that's cool.

You should be good with the old tascam. The other alternative is to just go with outboard preamps for everything, but you will still need a board to listen so you might as well get one that will do everything.
