I was just wondering. I often have a hard time hearing my voice while singing. I even make a vocal mix and pull an ear out of the phones but it gets hard when doubling vocals.

Any thoughts or tips?

I just pump up the volume of the vocal while tracking so I can hear it with the Instruments

In the past I have used headphones. This weekend, I am going to try it using my in-ear monitors and see how it goes.

Seein' I have no vocal skillz whatsoever...

......as a matter o' fact I can't even TALK in key, most of my jammies are instrumentals. Ona few occasions, I have had the opportunity to record male and female singers, a coupla' rappers
and a buncha' kids! However, recording vocs is my WEAKEST point as I have not had that many chances to do so!
I'm not so much concerned with specific mics or pre's, just the overall cleanly, captured recording of and BASIC APPLICATION of
'verbs and dynamics processing of singers
During those few times I've had rec'ding vocs, I have had trouble controlling peaks during loud passages and proper comp'ing and levelling of the overall track(s). I try to explain to a certain degree
the need for him/her to use basic mic techniques(such as pulling back from the mic when a certain verse contains a crescendo with force or forward to define and articulate a soft passage), but overall my voc-recding skillz needs a lotta' help!!
I also plan on cutting back on my vices to get my larynx in some kinda shape to try to AT LEAST hold a note in key so I can start writing my own lyrics and use my most-horrid voice as a vocal-click
track until I get an ACTUAL vocalist to perform the track!

Mannn, ALL I WANT TO DO is learn BASIC VOC REC'DING 101 and take it from there. That's wh I feel we need a voc forum 'cause this VOCAL-NEWBIE right here is gonna' ask ya'll a WHOLE,
lotta' questions!

If we get enuff peeps to show interest(similar to collecting signatures for a specific cause), we can present our case to Dragonian Dave and hopefully he'll find a way!

Peace

in the phones, once in a while with one ear out to check my self against the mix.

I bump up the volume on the mic preamp so I don't have to get cloce to the mic, then turn up the volume on the headphone amp enough to be able to hear the vocal line over the music then adjust the vocal volume in the mix.

I knew a young lady who put cotton in one ear, and then placed some closed-back headphones over both, and really jacked up the headphone amp....

She wasn't a loud or very talented singer, but had a very pleasant voice- and she needed to hear herself to stay on key- so I gave her as much gain as I could :)

I have to take one ear out of the headphones and I put my finger in that ear. One ear hears the music and with a finger in the other ear it allows me to hear my own voice in my head MUCH more clearly. If I just pull the phones on and try to sing, no matter what the volume level, my pitch seems to go to hell in a handbag.

I usually take one side of the headphones off so I can hear the room sound of my singing to stay in key. But I have tried using a cheap pair of CD player type headphones at a low volume and this seems to work pretty well. After all, you only need to hear the pitch of the music to sing along. I set the volume low so that I get a good balance between my voice coming thru the headphones and my voice in the room. This allows me to hear my voice very clearly. I do this for tracking only. It works very well for me.

Usually use headphones on both ears, but singing in front of the monitors is much more comfortable and easier. I should really do it more often...

I've been using headphones for tracking vocals. One thing that I was shocked by is that the mic can actually pick up the mix leaking from the headphones. WOW.. ;)

Just a question about pitch. Does everyone think that if your vocal is monitored back to you loud enough with the instruments in the head phones that you should be ok to keep pitch or do you think you need to hear a bit of your voice in the room ie; keeping one ear uncovered.

Well, my vocal booth is totally dead, so I keep the earphones on.

When I sing with my band, I am wearing ear monitors, so I dont hear the room much anyway.

I like the idea of llisting to whats actually coming through the microphone.
