Home-Studio Amp

I believe I play better when I like the sound I'm producing in the room. For me that means I want a tube amp with a push/pull circuit. I prefer to use the lowest wattage that fits the situation while leaving me with some clean headroom.

Most amps that fit the bill for me are 12 - 18 watts. I can't get a sound I really like using a single ended amp or a 12AU7 as a power tube. That's a personal preference.

So what I'm suggesting to the OP is to get an amp that gives him a tone he loves, dial it a little cleaner than he normally would, and go with that. It doesn't need to be expensive.

+1 on attenuators, particularly the Weber ones.

This is important. Mic selection and placement is a big factor in getting the recorded sound you want.

200W Marshall Major.
ya' know, I had one of those once. It was too loud to use for anything even back in the day so i sold it for $300.

Whish I had that back to sell at modern collector prices!

It's a great bass amp.

I imagine so ..... at the time I was using it for guitar instead of its' intended use and it was stupid loud for that purpose. And that was back at a time when i really liked LOUD too!
:D

I got a Marshall Micro Stack, 15 watts into 2 10" cabs. Sounds great, not too loud.

Ya know, Bob, you have me thinking. I might open my mind on my hard-line opinion that you can't go direct from a guitar and get as good a tone as mic'ing the speaker on a all-tube guitar amp...

Thinking... thinking... thinking...

Ah, I'm done. Can't be done.:)

Guys, it was a JOKE. Really. Didn't you see the :) ? I don't doubt there are "many paths up the mountain."

Can't believe I gotta quote myself...:p

of course it was a joke ........ people take this shit FAR too seriously but that's always been a part of it and always will be. Just the way it is.

My lead guitarist plays through a little 5 watt Sligo, hand wired all tube head with a single 12" Celestion green back...it sounds AWEEEEESOME, plenty of gain and will break up nicely whenever he needs it to.

I don't have a clue what sounds awesome is except what sounds awesome to me. I'm not bagging ya, but I generally play much larger amps and I know a 5 watt'r just isn't going to cut it for me and it's not an experience issue.

yeah, outside of the studio I can't see a 5 watter being sufficient for me either.

BUT ....... awesome to someone else can be a whole 'nother thing.

Actually, not to stir shit up but, :D , IF you have a first rate PA and PA guy and serious monitors it could work.
At bike week we play big stages with like 8 different monitor mixes and a solid bar of monitors acroos the front of the stage and big side fills and it doesn't matter anyway 'cause the PA is HUGE and the soundguy, scruffy, is excellent. You tell him what you want in each monitor and it's there!!
So I could see it working under those circumstances.
But it's so rare to have that ....... otherwise though, I desire a bit 'o' watts.

I should have been way more succinct...

I don't have a clue what awesome means when someone else uses that phrase... and especially in the context of a 5 watt amp.

Now if someone says, it sounds awesome and here's a clip... then just possibly/maybe a point of reference can be gleaned.

for sure awesome can mean radically different things to different players.

I thought we were discussing " recording " here.......not live sound.........and for point of refrence, I have been a professional FOH tech for almost 30 years, if your PA is adequate, the size of the amp or your stage volume is a moot point.......I have found in my years that a LOWER stage volume is much easier and smoother to mix and get a good sound to your audience than some guy with a 100 watt amp turned up to 11 .........
