I was just watching Rocky 4 on TV saturday. When the song " theres no easy way out" came on I was surprised by the compression.

When the " bass" comes in near the beginning, you can hear duck-o-matic, on what seems to be the whole mix, yet, when the guitars come in for the chorus it sounds WAY above the ducking threshold of the earlier part....

but wait, theres more

during the chorus, when the "bass" hits again, it ducks in the same way on what seems to be the whole mix, but with a much different style of realease...

very interesting stuff

Are you considering the TV station's suck-o-matic's contribution in there? (Or maybe that's exact-ally what you're talking about...:D

thats what I was thinking so I downloaded several different versions off of kazaa. Its still there in varying degrees in all versions...because of the absolute levels at different places, you can tell that it wasnt just one limiter atthe same threshold thru the song, its really pretty neat

Well there's automation for the compressor plugs we can put on the various parameters.
Haven't EVEN been there yet. I'm up to my neck just with the 'normal' stuff.:p
Sounds like fun.

this was made back in the day when plugins were only made by " Glade" and FX automation consisted of three guys saying " one two three NOW!!!!! "

snapshots were done by recording the damn thing thru different settings then splicing the tape together at different points
