Hi I'm new here, can I get your opinion on T38 heads?

My previous comments about calibration were based on the assumption that you had cleaned the tape path. If you didn't get to that yet, then all bets are are off until you've managed that. Also, you have to use new healthy tape that doesn't have sticky shed syndrome for any meaningful tests/serious recording.

Finally got some head cleaning stuff today and have just spent 10 minutes thoroughly cleaning the tape path, boy it came off by the bucket load!

Yeah, now see what difference that makes to recording and playing back. Though yeah, you probably want to get some fresh tape if you can.
 
I'm looking at getting some fresh tape yeah, now the recording and playback has dramatically changed, before I cleaned it I could hit the inputs into the red and it wouldn't clip, now it clips and distorts if I go over say -5, same problems with meters on playback though, but part of me would blame it on the old tape too...

Well, now that you've got clean heads and the levels are still wonky, you can now look at calibration. The tape you're using, though it might be old, would not cause those level disparities just because of its age or amount of use. When tape wears out, usually you'll hear drop outs. But ordinarily, a healthy tape can be played a few thousand times if its not shedding or being played on a filthy/abrasive tape path.

But by all means, definitely get some fresh new tape.
