Hey moskus...

I think Jagular needs to pick the song. Then we need a plan of attack.

I usually start most of my songs with just a quarter-note click track, and a keyboard track playing the chords. That's to set up the tempo and overall song structure. Both tracks usually get deleted down the road. After that you start building the real tracks - in my case usually bass next, then drums.

Seems like first we need to pick a song (Jagular?), and then people need to sign up for what part they are going to do.

My pick is for James to do the basic tracks (click and keyboard chords). I have to pick out keyboard parts in the PRV, which is quite tedious. James can just play them. :)

Dachay, sounds like a plan to me. Jagular? James? Everyone? You all in on this?

Put me down for Bass, Guitar, Lead, Rythem, acoustic, classic, and my daughter, female vocals. any one of em...or whatever.

Lets get the click track going first, see where that leads us.

Jagular, which one?

Ok…here are the entrants as I compiled them…just this minute :D

originals

Moonbeams – wfaroni
So I’ll Dream – Porter
Day by Day – wfaroni (haven’t heard this one yet - I will this weekend)

covers

Turn Your Love Around – George Benson (Jagular)
Saturday In The Park – Chicago (Jagular)
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is – Chicago (Jagular)
25 or 6 to 4 – Chicago (Jagular) – I just thought of this one ;) :p
Reminiscing – Little River Band (Jagular)
You’re The Biggest Part of Me – Ambrosia (dachay2tnr)

Let me know if I missed any. I did it kind of quickly.

Now…I think at this point I am favoring a cover just because it would be good warm up and the arrangement is easy because many of us already know what the original version sounded like. I still think we should do an original after this too if anyone is up for it. It would be fun to have one on the next comp cd. Let’s get writing that ACKUS tune :D.

I am leaning toward either “Reminiscing” or “You’re The Biggest Part Of Me”. I know Reminiscing is totally doable. You’re The Biggest… I think is although I do recall some high falsetto parts in there. I may have to get a hold of that one to check it out a little closer. I think both of these songs have enough instrumentation to go around and some good bg vocals that we can have fun with. Those are my thoughts for now.

Keep in mind, I’m still willing to do any of the above if folks want to. :)

Thoughts? Comments?

Gawd…I hate picking :D (how is that for decisiveness :D)

I'll listen to the above songs (including Bill's that I haven't listened to yet) this weekend and narrow it down. You guys discuss in the meantime. :D. Let's have something picked by Monday? Sound good?

Jagular, our Producer, Dachay, has delegated responsibility to you to choose a song.:D (okay, he kind of suggested you do it, aided and abetted by me);)

If we all discuss this any more, my knob will drop off with boredom.:)

I vote you choose the song and we all fall in behind you with your decision and then Dachay is leader of the pack to get it organised and produced.

And we can get going with whatever effort/participation we need/want to do.

Let me further confuse things with 3 more classic covers to consider.

Since I fell for you ---lenny welch

Im so lonesome I could cry,--- has a place for horns

Born to be wild---steppinwolf

:) I hope this helps simplify things:)

Peace
Bill

Taking the bull by the horns. . .

. . . or getting gored?

Anyways. . . . assuming there is still any dwindling interest in this project, I took the liberty of putting together a scratch track of Biggest Part of Me by Ambrosia (I did the work, I got to pick the song :) ). The track as it stands now has midi bass, midi keys and a click.

If anyone wants to take a crack at adding instruments and vocals to it, let's figure out a plan.

First, though, if Jag is going to sing it (which is my assumption), he may want to check it out first before anyone else does anything. The reason? The scratch track is in the key of the original recording which is somewhat high, however, since it is midi I can easily drop it a notch (or two) if necessary. So before we record any actual instruments, we probably want to be sure this is the right key.

BTW, if no one is interested (or if no one likes the song choice), it is not a big deal. I will find a use for the track somewhere along the line, so the work won't go to waste. However, IMHO, it is a great song and could be a fun experience - the trans-Atlantic, trans-Pacific Cakewalk colarboration.

Who's in?? Where we posting? Who's mixing? Who's on first?

Ummm…hi guys…sorry I didn’t get back here on Monday.

Thanks Mike, for putting that together. You must have been bored :p :D.

Here is my take on it. If I had to choose which one I would like to sing for the absolute challenge of it, I would pick the Ambrosia tune. I got a copy of it and sang along. I have to say…it is quite challenging. The cool thing is I think I could do it (falsetto parts and all) but it would probably take some doing (ie. I wouldn’t be able to do take after take after take in one sitting). But the thought of doing it is quite attractive to me to prove my voice to myself a little as this is a bit out of my typical box as well. It may also flop. I’m not 100% sure yet. I love the idea of the challenge though. Even though I don’t hear a lot of guitar work in the original recording, I do think there are some opportunities to arrange some cool rides on guitars & trumpet (the sax solos seem quite trumpet friendly) in here. So that may open this up to a cool jazz jam feel :D.

The other school of thought IMO is that I think the Little River Band tune has a bit more work for the guitarists in the crowd (staying true to the recording) and I’m fairly certain I can nail the vocal on this one. Definitely a safer choice for me.

How about this. Maybe Mike can send me an mp3 of the scratch track & give me a chance to lay a scratch vocal on there. Just to see if seems workable. Should only take a few days to turn this around. Then y’all can hear where it’s headed. If it sounds like crap (my vocal) we can do the other one. I have a feeling Mike can use this with the Dachays somewhere along the line. The harmonies in here are killer. (BTW…who’s gonna do the bg vocal tracks?)

Sound cool?

Again, sorry for not getting back here sooner. Just call me waffler :D

Sounds like the start of a plan, John. I'll send you the mp3 tomorrow from work (so I can use the high speed connection instead of my dial-up.).

As I said, no big deal if you veto it, I will find opportunities for it.

I agree there is more guitar work in the LRB song, but I started noddling around with this one on a lark and next thing I knew it was halfway finished - so I followed through on it. I do agree that the sax can probably be covered by a trumpet, and there is some guitar. A lot of keys, and a real nice bass line.

Anyway, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'll get you the track and we'll see where we go from there.

BTW, if we decide to do Reminiscing, someone else will get the privielge of doing the scratch track. Too many 11ths and 13ths for my limited brain. ;)

Let's see:
In theory 13th = 1st, 3rd, 5th, b7th, 9th, 11th, 13th

Hmm. I don't think I have the requisite number of fingers on my left hand... Where's Jim Carey when you need him :)

Verse 3:

Friday night it was late I was walking you home we got down
to the gate and
I was dreaming of the night
Would it turn out right
Now as the years roll on
Each time we hear our favorite song
The memories come along
Oh the times we're missing
Spending the hours reminiscing

Coda: trumpet solo over shortened verse [omit lines 4-6] chords;
fade over repeated D, Em7/D

-----------------

My cousin has asked me to play a piece with her for her final HSC (final year exams in Australia)... Eva Cassidy - Over the Rainbow... basic chords, interesting picking pattern though.

When it comes to theory....
Although I have played guitar for years, I never got into the theory... I'm currently reading Tunesmith (Jimmy Webb) and it's sort of starting to make sense...

Porter

As per usual.. I'm at work so I can't guarantee if the chords above are the same as the recording, however I imagine they would be close.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I REPEAT. PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

BTW, howcum the guitarist has to play a different chord than the rest of the band? I frequently play the wrong chords, but I've never seen instructions to do so. :D

It has been said by other members of LRB that Glenn Shorrock never sounded better than on Reminiscing.

It's from the album Sleeper Catcher that I have on vinyl. I'll record it onto MD and start some furious learning. :)

Dachay,
I'm going to attempt that C13#11. This may take some time. Don't try to stop me...

If it means having to play a C9-5, I'll consider it a personal failure. ;)

I realize this is a different voicing ....but a C13#11 can be played the same as CM7 or 223232 according to what I looked up.
I can usually twist my fingers with the best of them but that x32332 is not really do-able if youve got to change in and out of it, unless youve got a "God Given" gumby gift :)

Hey I can hold it and just hit it on its own separate track :D I love recording :D

And we thought PICKING a song was the hard part seems like pickin the song will be a challenge as well.

Great song pick ;) by the way

Bill

Er....so what song are we doin? Biggest part of me? Or Reminiscing? Or BPOM first and then see what happens?

BTW, I used to be decisive once, but now I'm not so sure:D

This is what generally happens in my household when I'm ask to make a choice:

Mrs BluesMeister "Can't you make a decision???"
BluesMeister "Yes darling. I decided to ask you..." :)

Because a guitarist don't have 8 fingers on one hand... ;)

And we're just so much cooler and special. :D

Discussion in our house this morning:

Mrs Paul881 "I told you that wouldn't work"

Paul881 "When? I don't remember you telling me that"

Mrs Paul881 "Well, I told you when you did it, five years ago"

Paul881 "So it worked for five years then?"

Mrs Paul881<exasperated> "No need to get picky with me!"

Women eh, can't live with em, can't live without em:(
Lol:D

Hmmmmm.... I've read that post 5 times, and now I'm wondering what "that" was...

Obviously something that should have worked for more than 5 years. :D

Er....so what song are we doin?
We're mulling.

But it seems that if Jagular vetoes BPOM, Bluesmeister is volunteering to handle the scratch track for Reminiscing (since he'll be the only one who can play a C13#11). :)

Because a guitarist don't have 8 fingers on one hand...
Dummy. You use both hands and strum with the pick held in your mouth.
