here's a very interesting mic comparison by price range

heh, I think so far at least one person has definitively said that #1, #2, #3 and #4 are the 58 ;)

God, I must be deaf. It's so hard to hear a big difference (especially one justifying a huge price differential). I know little about mics, but I know what I like. I'm going play this back on something better than streaming through the computer to my walkman headphones. What I could tell, while allowing the Media Player to loop without looking, which take was number 2. I think I liked this the most and 3 the least. I still intend to listen on a better setup, though.

"Don't cry, Holy Moses:D ..." That's what I thought it was.

Dump the teacher.

Thanks for the effort.

c'mon, at least tell us which one's the 58.

I agree, don't let that vocal teacher change your sound too much.

I once knew a girl who was breaking into broadcast news and was taking voice and diction lessons to drop her faint southern accent. "I want to sound like I come from nowhere" she said. It made me sad.

I didn't really like number 3 or number 2. I thought 1 and 4 were really good though. I'm gonna guess that 2 is the 4033, 3 is the 58, 1 is the marshall and 4 is the blue berry. But at least on my bose wave radio (wierd ass frequency response) they 1 and 4 don't sound different enough to justify the price....

I just counted, and we're up to 24 responses, and with this one, we're up to 25. C'mon all we need are five more people and we can know which one's the 58!

I think #1's the 58 simply cause it did'nt capture some of the siblence the others (being condensers) did.

Well, I'm only familiar with the 58 and the 4033, so my guess is that the 4033 is #1 (i hear that sibilance all the time) and the 58 is #3 - i hear some distortion on #3 too. I liked #2 best - thought it had a more defined, yet smooth top end. #4 was a close second.

Hey, if I post this meaningless little post, will that be counted as # 29?

Come on, we're dying here.

No, I think this one is 30...

Thats 30. Now own up and tell us which is which!!!

:):):):):)

MORE SMILIES!!

:p :p  :o :( :D     :( :( :D ;) :p

by the way,

I forgot to tell you guys my signal chain.

mic, running blue blueberry cable to sytek mpx4a into lucid ad9624, clocked with lucid genx6 via spdif, direct at 24/44.1 into soundforge. Used waves compressor for compression.

Dang, it feels good to be a tyrant :D

We don't give a fuck ;)

Now tell us the mics.

If #4 turns out to be a V67 and you don't tell before its off sale again @ Mars, I'm taking the difference out on you, buddy!

I'm going to say they appear in this order

Cut 1.) Blue
Cut 2.) Marshall
Cut 3.) 4033
Cut 4.) SM58

yeah I now think #3 is 58...2 is blue, 4 is v67 and 1 is the 4033. feel pretty confident in that one. thats my new decision. Now I feel like a real idiot for my initial decision. hehe. time to go buy U2 elevation tour dvd...

but since I am no tyrant, and some people might not be back till monday, I'm going to tell you.

Drum roll please.

clip 1: Marshall mxl v67g
clip 2: Blue Blueberry
clip 3: Shure sm58(with the foam removed)
clip 4: Audio Technica 4033 sm

Ok. its interesting that no one got it right even though some came close. This, to me, goes to show that the price of the mic does not reflect in the sound. ie, there is not a direct correlation between sound quality and price.

MY initial opinions were:

mxl v67:
I borrowed it from the guy I had sold it to and it was the first time running it through the sytek. Man, I was amazed by the roundness of it when I heard it. It had a roundness that I could not get from the blueberry. I wanted to buy it back.

Blueberry:
It sounded small and a distant at even 4-5 inches away(which is where I recorded at). It clipped at the gain level that had been fine for the v67 though. Its a much hotter mic.

sm58:
I thought, now I know why the mic is reverred. It sounded great for a $90 mic and more importantly, it sounded comparable. A little bit covered but nothing that some eq cant fix.

4033:
wow, Ok . forget about buying back the v67. This gave me everything I had heard in the v67 and some more. It sounded a little smoother and shinier in the top end. I also preferred it to the blueberry.

My thoughts after listening a lot:

v67:
this mic is a sweet mic, but its not as smooth as I want. I could also hear a little too much room

blueberry:
very smooth, no doubt, and detailed, but still could be bigger. I liked it best of all, no doubt in part because I paid so much for it. If it had cost me $150 I would have sold it long ago.

sm58:
came out last in this test and I wont use it for vocals if I have a condenser. It has a midrange bump thast is noticeable. Noticeable is not good.

4033:
this mic is still not the best for my voice, but DANG, this mic is good. It just sounded balanced, real, smooth (even though not as smooth as the blueberry). I think it won value for money in this test.

anyhoww , there you have it. I think that nowadays, the determinant is not how many rave reviews it got, or how many "mic of the year " awards, but how it sounds, on your voice, in your room. Money could be better spent on, you guessed it, an outbaord REVERB, or monitors.

I'll be damned!

I'm impressed with the 4033...it has always sounded a bit harsh to me. At the very least its a good match for your voice, and I'll have to reconsider my opinion of it.

Wow, my favorite was a mic I have (the 4033) that I never use. Just goes to show you how well I know that mic--and how much I was hoping the V67 was the one I liked, because it sounds like such a great deal. At least I got the Blue and the SM58 right! I would have loved to see my beloved NTK in there, but oh well.

Personally, I think your voice sounds best with the 4033, and I would sell that Blueberry if I was you. It may have cost you a ton, but it adds way too much high end to your voice.

I think the SM58 was the easiest to guess, and the mic that sounded the cheapest. And I think most people guessed the Blueberry right, so I think that it is pretty easy to tell what's cheap and what's expensive.

However, price doesn't necessarily mean it's desirable; I knew which one was the Blueberry because it had a lot of really crisp high end, but that also made me not like the sound as much.

clip 4 doesn't sound that great to me. It seems really bass heavy. I liked #2 all along...and moments before jag posted i realized that and figured it was the blue. But, the marshall is *very* close...I am impressed.

hey Cyan - just for kicks, you still have the dry tracks around? I'd really like to hear the same files without the compression.

Well said charger. Bet that blue would sound a lot better for cymbals or something.
