Hi guys,

I've been doing this mixing lark for a good few years now and I'm slowly learning step by step.

This is my latest effort. I quite like it but I'm not convinced it will transfer (I know - untreated room, cheap monitors...). In comparison with commercial reference tracks it is lacking a certain something.....

I'd really appreciate it if you could give it a listen and critique the hell out of it if necessary. I'm here to learn so don't be afraid of offending me, whatever it takes to get the track up to par..

The song is Joint Effort and it's by my band, G-Jay.

Thanks for your time,

Tony.

Well you've got the volume down pat...it blew my speakers off the table. Apart from that I think your vocal is too harsh sounding...maybe drop its gain a touch. That's all really.

Great song and performance and excellent tracking skills....

I liked the mix overall except when I put it in my DAW I thought it sounded better with an overall bass compression and a slight mid and low EQ cut and a significant high boost.....

very cool...kudos....

I assume you're referring to the lack of in-your-face-ness. I always feel like I have this same problem, and I think I've slowly been getting better at it.

I think, listening to your recording that it has a lot to do with the drums. The kick doesn't kick very hard. I think it can use more click, but I like clicky kick drums. Either way, the kick shouldn't be whoomph, more of a poomph.

The guitars also sound a little distant. It took me a long time before I got a guitar sound that I was happy with. It's just a long process of trial and error.

There is also a lot of Mastering work to be done. You are going to have to slam it against a limiter in order to sound like professional tracks, whether you like it or not.

I also think the vocals need more compression or something.

It is a cool song.
