Sorry i was just joking. I'd love to be able to write "happy" song but i can so i wont try. Sorry if offended you

ColdAsh

I took nothing as an offense. I really was addressing the fact that creativity, no matter what its nature, is a gift, and that it takes courage to share it.

We all have issues, and the need to excersize our demons, or spread a little happiness. But not being able to create, or express ourselves, does without exception really "SUCK!"

Keep the faith, Ozlee:cool:

Imagine you are writing a song for a Disney cartoon. Seems silly, but try it. What would you write if you were Elton John, being payed to write songs for the Lion King? Beauty and the Beast? Pocahontas?
If I try to write a positive song just for its own sake, it always comes out sounding trite. If I give myself a setting to start from, a "what if" scenario, I find I have more luck.
Elton John came up with "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life". Not bad.

OR

Put your pissed lyrics to happy music. Sometimes setting up a contradiction like that can be interesting. THink of "I'm Just a Gigalo" i.e. Or how about "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid?

I can say this: don't discount your songs just because you think they sound stupid. We all think our songs sound stupid. Write the song anyway. Let it lead you where it wants to go, and finish it. A song in the hand is worth two in the DAW.

I hate to be picky and im not an Elton John fan but i dont think he writes the lyrics

getugrip,
Your almost as good as SN8,I still call people Scoobydoodoo heads,I gotta sing this song to my wife!:D

Yup, you're right. Tim Rice is the lyracist on those songs. He is an absolute lyrical genious...but I've gone on and on about that in other threads.
The two songs I mentioned were co-written by TR and EJ. TR wrote the lyrics for the balance of the movies' songs by himself.

Hi jvasey

The songs that flow from me vary. Most are in various blues styles. Some country, some folk, some psychedelic, etc.

I have no idea about inspiration. My mood is mellow, but a bit reckless. One time I write death stuff, crying songs, broken love songs. The next time a song pops out for kids, like six and under maybe. I've tried to get inspired by something nice and happy, you know, the inspirational route, but I become frustrated cuz it's not me. I have written some fairly nice songs, I wouldn't call them happy (I think of 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' when I say that, and I hate that song) but they bring a good feeling to the listener.

Maybe if you were to try to set your mood before you begin playing. Take your time and relax.
I think if you were to possibly tone your insturment down, mellow like. Begin a chord progression with a lot of minor chords, soft, slow like.

Hope something happens 'happy' for you. Good luck.

define positive????

well I wrote this song bout me killing my next door nieghbour cause he was being a real prick and now when he shits me I just sing my positive little tune. Did you think of the option that by writing a song that expounds apon a theme that may not be positive it can have a positive effect by letting others out there know they are not alone. For example I have written the song GIVES ME THE SHITS and when played for people they have thanked me for giving them somthing to sing when they are given the shits, same things goes for my song SHIT HAPPENS.I guess what Im trying to say is that a song dont have to be positive to be a positive song. Just make sure that it rocks.

An interesting point Rocky.

For every feeling anyone has sung a song about, there are lots of people out there who have the same feelings. Whether we have stomach cramps or feeling like dying cuz we been dumped.
Though we individuals, we're the same.

Writing Upbeat happy songs is difficult... But they dont have to come out the way everyone expects a happy song to come out....

Emotions can hide behind other emotions, and slide out in a more..... devious for lack of a better word.. way... since I was a little kid I was writing deep depressing melodromatic "baptized in a lake of tears" type songs...... Then I realized your song can be totally fucking depressing... but gradually twist into a more balanced... (not hippie but not dying fetus) either.....

Try writing a song as you usually would but not being afraid to let others here the way you really feel about a subject... because you cant really go wrong with "Broken thoughts that bleed for real... cold steel bars Im watching through"..... type shit.

Demensia.

Its not silly that allows a song to be positive. You can have a negative theme with a positve end result. Its like watching a movie. I'm a happy ending kind of guy. I don't care what the sad or bad part is as long as it ends right. If I'm going to invest 1-1/2 to 2 hours in a movie, I want to feel good when its over. If I wanted to be depressed I would watch CNN.

It took me over 10 years to write a song about a very sensitive issue that was very negative. It was because the bad was magnified so bad, I couldn't see the good. I finally backed away and looked at the whole picture and saw the good. It was harder to find, but it was always there.

For the most part, the majority of people are naturally negative. And its usually do to the problems in our own lives, big and small, and the problems we see and hear around us that help to form this negative outlook. We sometimes rise to the positive but soon return to our comfort zone of the media conditioned outlook we are accustomed to. There are exceptions to this, I know. But there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. But what if its a train!!! ;)

I've followed this thread from its begining and this is what I feel like it has lead me to write. Most if not all of the people that subscribe to this site are artists at some level. Everything that I read about artists and creativity is that they are driven by passion and the unrelenting need to express it. Creativity takes many different forms and has many different sources over an individals lifetime, and it is not always apreciated or understood.
The other side of creativity that seems to be true, is that all artists have their personal tragidies that drive their art and many to their own self destruction as well as the destruction of their work.

When anyone becomes a master of their craft, they typically can work within any medium that expresses that craft. There will always be purists in any pursuit that will refuse to work outside of their chosen medium. I guess what I really am trying to get at is that anyone wanting to write positive songs should work towards mastering their craft. Which is what this thread has expressed in one way or another from many different points of view.

Keep the faith, and keep on writing.

happiness

wait until you are in a horrible mood, then write your happy song. experiment with different styles.

HAPPY-HAPPY-JOY-JOY

Cool thread guys. I've been off the net for a time, kinda self-inflicted re-direction of available resources, to put it simply.
It's very hard to intentionally write a positive song without being sappy, aint it. Think of some examples of uplifting songs. What do they have in common. Make a list of those qualities and write some songs making an effort to include those qualities or characteristics in them. Don't worry about them being dorkey. If they are dorkey, figure out what makes them dorkey and , as I am so fond of saying, RE-WRITE-RE-WRITE-RE-WRITE. I guarantee that this method will yield a positive song because if you follow my instructions you will not have time to wallow in your pitiful self absorbed morbidity and that alone will make you feel better. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Go off drugs for at least 6 weeks and see if that doesn't improve your outlook. I dont mean that as a put down, it's just a fact that most recreational drugs will deplete your body chemistry and affect your mood.

I don't write positive songs but I do write spiritual songs. Positive songs usually sound lame because you can usually tell that the same person has written these songs for all of these artists or the artist decides that I've done everything else it's time for a positive record. (mary J.) The part that is always missing with these snick jr, britney spears, guessame street songs is raw emotion that comes with heartfelt music. So dude just try writing down exactly what it is that you feel or what it is that you are trying to say. Then try to create a melody for it. A song never sounds silly if it comes from your true emotions. Or try the stream of conciousness method just write for set amount of time without ever picking up your pen, something pure is bound to come out. But make sure it comes from the heart.
