i monitor my song's levels in winamp and it shows a complete lack of high frequencies. However i can listen to the high frequencies quite clearly. Whats wrong?

I open other bands' songs and they haf all the levels all the way up. Also, i notice that when i open other songs in Sound Forge, i find that they clip alot! Why is this?

commercial songs have been mastered. aka, they are at the maximum possible level without hearing any clipping - although you may SEE it digitally.

To get some HIGHs, you may need to invest in better pre's or a mic that excentuates some highs (perhaps for vocals and/or certain guitar things you might want it on)...

are you mixing/monitoring with headphones, or computer speakers...and do you have any EQ with whatever you are listening to your mixes on?

It just could be that your mix IS lacking high end, but whatver you're using to monitor could be artificially enhancing.

Just a thought...

I used to winamp to monitor the levels. I can hear the high ends but winamp doesnt display them in the graphic spectrum analyser.

I'm listening with pc speakers. It's not that my mix sounds muddy or something, in fact it sounds quite crisp after i turned up the trebles in the master EQ.

Upon listening again i think i lack the mids-treble. The bass frequency in the spectrum analyser always goes all the way up.

Btw can anyone have a accurate defination of process of mastering?

Bingo

since you have turned up the treble in your EQ, you are emphasizing a frequency range that is weak in your mix. So it SOUNDS ok when you listen to it, but the reality of the situation is that it's NOT ok. Your mix should sound good with NO EQ added to it.

Thanks guys. So what do i do? Go back to each individual track and 'brighten' the high ends of cymbals and such?

Btw, is are there any good mp3s posted here which are made with Acid.

Clear hights with no pops

I am using CoolEdit Pro (that I find better than SF) to generate clear high frequencies by using parametric equal (Mackie Emulation) :
Low/High ends boosted spline curve +6 dB (Loudness) +6 dB at 12 Khz on a range of 1000 Hz before normalizing to 0 dB.
It sounds amazing!

Hey guys, i rendered a 64kps mp3 version of my song, and it seems that there are no problems with the trebles anymore, all the levels go way up.

But the lowest bass level 20hz(?) is quite low all the time. What does this mean? Issit a mp3 quality thing? Or is it a dithering problem? My projects are in 48000khz cause i'm using SB Audigy card and i understand that when i render it to CD quality becomes 44Khz.

Does this mean i should apply dither.

Low Fq & 48 to 44.1

Using the same tool in CEP you can resamples in extra high quality (w/prefiltering) and apply low boost.
