help me with a pop problem

No, not pop music, popping. A strange pop keeps showing up out of nowhere at the beginning of audio parts.

I'll record a part, like an acoustic guitar and everything will be fine. Then, after a while, when I start the part again, at the first sound there is a pop. If I loop the part it pops every time the file starts over. If I bring the file into wavelab, there is no pop or spike, or anything to indicate there should be a pop.

I'll bypass every effect or processing and the pop will still be there.

This doesn't always happen, so I'm a little confused by it.

Has anyone experienced this?
 
All the time my friend and I still haven't found a way around it........ :(
 
I'm not alone. That is almost enough...ALMOST! I want the damn pop gone!!!!

Would you by any chance have an Athlon processor/motherboard?

Everyone I know with Athlons expeience this with Cubase so I was thinknig of changing to a Pentium. But if you've got a pentium then I guess theres not much point. :(
 
I run cubase 5 vst /32 on a athlon system with no problems runs pretty dam solid actually YMMV but i dont think its an athlon thing honestly the athlons have a higher FPU so they *should* perform better than a pentium of the same speed. (enough ranting though either should work just fine for audio) maybe a bit more specs about your machine would help though.
 
yup, this box is an athlon. 1.2ghz with 256 RAM, maybe 512, can't remember. Use a Delta 66.

I opened the file the next day and cubase gave me no pop. I think its software, though I can't say it's not related to the AMD processor. The most irritating problems are the ones that aren't consistent.

Is this the same with everyone else who has this problem?
 
how bout some specs on your motherboard chipset .namely is it a VIA chipset what version of the 4in1's what version of Windows .........Randy5235
 
I know its VIA, but I don't know how to tell which version 4 in 1. I've never bothered to update the firmware or the drivers.

Maybe I ought.
 
I run an Athlon 1.8 with 256 mb of DDR RAM. I've configured my OS (Win 98se) to run best for audio, ie, turned off CD insert notification, changed virtual memory, etc, and still have popping problems. As for Chipsets, I have no clue.

Where would I look to find this on the computer?
 
If I recall correctly, I remember reading a while back about various conflicts between certain types of processors/chipsets/motherboards/soundcards, etc. I think a lot of the problems I'm remembering were around Athlon processors and VIA chipsets, but I'm not totally sure. This was about a year ago. Do a search on Google for whatever might pull this up, and click on the "groups" tab in the Google search. You'll likely get scads of hits from the alt.steinberg.cubase newsgroup.

if you're monitoring these pops in "digital playback" they could simply be an aberant outcome of using a pc to "output" audio...
do they appear on the final master cd?...or do you only hear them during play-back on your pc?

The pops ar ein the master cd and the recording. I can actually see them on the wave form of the recorded part.

Please help!!!!

I've got to the stage where I'm going to completly wipe and then clean and reinstall everything, working from the bottom up. Drastic, but my god, the pops........... They haunt my dreams.
 
ok jim and Neil, first things first--have you tried running DxDiagnostics?--do a search for DxDiag, open it and run thru each page--do each "test" and see what pops up...get back to us.

…be sure to visit Intel, MicroSoft, and the site for your sound-board manufacturer to download the latest/greatest drivers, updates, etc…I’m gonna search for a solution to your “pop” problem…give me a day or two to get back to you…in the mean-time, study what I have outlined above (note the “status” when applicable and search the Intel site or MS site for any error-codes) and install all the new drivers and updates that you can get your hands on—including Directx…later.
 
I expect that you've both already checked out the midiman site, but if not, they do mention a "pop/click" problem which is supposedly related to the "ATA 100 controller" and the "Asus CUSL-2 motherboard"...also at the midiman site, I found this question/answer--Q: I own a AMD processor with a VIA chipset and am getting jitters when recording or when starting the windows machine.

A: This is usually due to VIA chipset with AMD processors and there are fixes from the two links listed beneath. The problems seems to stem from the USB in the BIOS being disabled plus there is a file you will need to download and run from one of these web sites.

something else to consider is the possibility of bad cable--poorly shielded...or, it could be picking up emi from one of your power cables--i.e. pc, printer, a near by stereo...I realize it's only 3' but try to isolate it from any AC lines...cables are always a "weak" point...I would imagine that midiman could test your cable(s)...

I've just read what you have posted to help me and Jiminy, but haven't had tiem to run it all through on my computer yet. I'll get back you as how it goes.

I just wanted to say a huge thankyou for taking the time to research and write the posts in response. Thankyou so so much ToyL.

By the way, I don't use a delta 1010 - I use a Gadget Labs Wave 8/24. Will teh information on the Midiman site be relevant?

...the fixes I mentioned earlier are probably only good for midiman products...not to worry though, other fixes will come along...I'll keep looking...did you run DxDiag?...have you updated your drivers?
 
I ran MSinfo32 and checked the IRQ's - the Wave 8/24 was sharing with (and I quote) "IRQ 5 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering". Now, this means nothing to me, so I have no idea what if its at all important.

If its any help my graphics card was also sharing its IRQ with something very similar.

When I ran Dxdiag it didn't come up with any conflicts in tyhe system, which seemed a little odd.

Thanks for all the effort in finding solutions, but I do look forward to hearing any replies!

...IRQ sharing isn't likely to cause your pops...here are a few things to check on--"nothing" running in the background--no virus-scan, etc...
get the most recent drivers for your video-card...PCI video-cards can really eat up your resources, but manufacturers usually have updated drivers available that aren't such RAM-hogs...
right-clk on My Computer, select Properties, select Performance, select Graphics, then reduce "Hardware Acceleration"...
you don't have disk-compression software running?--i.e. "Drivespace"...
in Cubase clk Options, then Audio Setup, then System, then adjust Disk Block Buffer Size--try 64kHz to start...
