Ok I think I'm followin ya

So here's basically what I should do (correct me if I'm wrong, as is likely hehe):
- Get a small mixer, and plug that in as stereo using both inputs
- Plug in all my stuff there.... say, 1-2 keyboards and a mic
- I can use each of the things that are plugged into the mixer one at a time, and I get them in stereo as intended (right? hoping hehe)
- I hear the output through my monitors whether the computer is on or off

With a small mixer you could do that. There are many ways to do the routing and it depends on a mixer. but I'm not sure what you're after? Maybe it's my bad english?

I just mainly want to be certain that, if I go with a mixer and plug all my stuff in through that, even though I can only record one single instrument/source at a time, I will still have that in stereo (i.e. L and R from my synths)

This is probably an elementary question that I'm just not portraying well... but I'm a supah noob hehe :D

(also - I understand I would be able to record more than one source at once, but only on a single track)

see you Leeking:cool:

it's 12.45 here

Would someone native english speaking guy who knows more about mixer than me show the way to this Keyz316 guy?

I have to go get something to eat...

but I'll be back...

Yes my friend you're almost there. It will be stereo...and with a mixer you can record several sources in a single stereo track or on two mono tracks.

Keyz- You are pretty much on the money with your setup. I would definately recomend the mackie or soundcraft. Get whatever you can afford and has enough inputs for you.

Don't get too caught up with recording your keyboard in stereo. The vast majority of keyboard samples are actually in mono and it's the onboard effects that give you the stereo image. Since it's better to record dry (without effects) then you dont really lose anything by recording in mono. Once you mixdown and add some stereo reverb or delay then you will have 'stereo'. Recording in mono also gives you the ability to pan the track easier and find it's place in the mix.

Why not use Echo Mia Digital in ?

Yes, Why not?
If Motif has digital out ( I assume It Has)then plug SPDIF cable to Echo Mia
Digital in.

Advantages:

-best possible sound quality
-easy to record MIDI tracks to audio when you start mixing it all up
- not necessarily needs external mixer
-all the way digital !!!
-you have two anlog inputs left for other gear (mics, preamps, synths etc.)

Disadvantages:

-you have to monitor Motif thru PC (of course, you can always jam
with headphones)
-if you want record vocals etc. you need some kind of preamp (like cheap AudioBuddy,
don.t know how good it is?)
-if you need more ouboard gear, without mixer it's difficult!

P.S. Riku, nice to see here other Finns too, I am from Helsinki too!
What kind of music you do? What kind of system you have?
Are you Pro, half Pro or serious home recording hobbist?

Hi Mace.... Mitäs äijä?

I think the motif spdif-out is optional. This is what is said on Yamaha web site:

"Multi-Out Expansion BoardAs an alternative to the mLAN board, the AIEB2 expansion board is also available, which gives you 6 assignable analog audio outputs as well as both optical and S/P DIF digital outputs."

But if the Keyz has it....just plug it in man :D

There are quite few finns who write here but I think there are more of us lurking around. I'm a simple homerecording guy. I have Duron800 based system with a Echo Mia card, MIC2200 pre,J-station and few microphones. You can check one live song from our band in mp3 mixing clinic to get the idea what kind of schait we are doing. here is a link https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?postid=400808#post400808

What about you how did you got here?

Riku

And one last thing...

Mace Welcome to this BBS.

Just stick around... this is a nice place and you'll find some nice and useful stuff here. Plus some of these guys here are extremly helpful.

Mixer and routing

I have a little behringer (eurorack 602A) and it very useful.
i have it set up so i can use my keyboard with computer on or off
and u can switch to bypassing the computer with a button

i connect the tape out of the mixer to the imput on my soundcard
and the output of the soundcard to the tape in of the mixer and the monitor outs to the speakers
there are two possible routings then by using the 'tape in to control room button"

if tape to ctrl room is off

keyboard into chanel on mixer ---> out tape ouput--->into soundcard
AND
keyboard into chanel on mixer ---> main output to control room out--->control room out to speakers

with the tape to ctrl room on

keyboard into chanel on mixer ---> out tape ouput--->into soundcard --->out soundcard into tape in on mixer
--->control room out to speakers

with the second setup meters measure sound coming from computer.

i hope this isn't too confusing

Yes,Riku, this BBS looks quite amusing!

I've been here just lurking sometimes but not regularly
I checked some threads and found out that here is
quite much novices.... some guys are not so sure what they
are really gonna do with their machines.
What the hell MIDI is?... hehe hehe!!!

I got P3 700 Mhz only... yes I know It's time to update soon!
three soundcards... Sw1000XG, DeltaDio 2496, SBLive Value
Logic and Gigastudio and so on...

Yes, I'm quite pissed off too with emagic strategies....
Don't really know what to do with Logic?
Maybe later get Cubase SX, cos' I'm more and less midi guy...
In fact, I had Atari + Cubase at eighties !!!

Trying to do some cool R&B, soul and funk...

But not much time to do it... family and children

Sometimes I feel It would be nice to be batchelor... so
much time and all fun!!!
But then again...which is better after all???

Thanks for welcoming here!

Maybe Keyz better get mixer too!
I have a nice little Soundcraft Spirit FOLIO Notepad.

sorry this is sort of a cross post ...

Could a missing mixer in my setup prevent me from hearing what i recorded through my soundcard (DirectPro Q10)
i can hear the keyboard when i play it thru the soundcard
not when i playback on cakewalk
this is how i record:

Keyboard to soundcard(2 inputs)
mic to sondcard
q10 to Cakewalk
in cakewalk i record in audio
should i get some midi cable and connect keyboard to soundcard by midi

thanks

i can hear AlleluJAH i can hear

i using the long way but i can hear what i recorded

it was possible thru the q10 preset
where i had to define settings

Thanks
