Getting better
Hello all.

I have finally purchased actual (albeit quite cheap) studio monitors - M-Audio Studiophiles.

My question is this: I don't have room on my desk (where my PC is) for them, and it looks like I'll have to mount them on the wall. My desk actually is in a corner, so that as I am facing forward looking at my PC the corner is directly in front of me.

I know I need the monitors at ear level. Can I mount them on the walls that make up the corner? If so, is there any special way to mount them, or can I go to Home Depot and buy a couple cheap standalone shelves for them?

Thanks and, as always, sorry for the ignorance!

Fab

There are special mounts but they usually are a little expensive. I would get shelfs or check out Best Buy or Wal Mart and see what they have for speaker stands.

FYI- Placing them against a wall and in a corner will give you an exaggerated bass response so keep that in mind when mixing.

I have a similliar setup but I put the monitors along the same wall and I just rotate for critical listening.

Yes, you should generally keep the speakers at least a foot away from walls, particularly in corners.

One option which my friend did was suspend the speakers from the ceiling--made a shelf from wood and chains on each of the 4 corners. Looks very cool.

Food for thought - thanks. I suppose I could get my hard drive off the desk and put them on either side of my computer monitor....
that might end up being the cheapest, easiest solution.

Thanks for the tips!

Fab,

I too have the M-Audio's and have become very happy with them for the space I needed them to fill. They tend to give you an exagerated bass response when too close to walls as someone here mentioned. However as you work with them, you will get a feel for them and learn to compensate for this. I think they are great little monitors. I could have purchased better ones, but the space was what concerned me most for some reason. Fortunately I have a bitchen wood shop and made some cool stands out of some wood that i had left over from previous projects. Got em at ear level. Made my workstation too. Good luck,

P.S. Just don't "mount" them in public.

Yeah Fangar, that's what I was thinking...
Well, I've never "mounted" any monitors - I was getting a woody thinking about it though. :D

Most of the time I refrain, but I know what you (Uh Us) dirty bastards are all about.

Thanks Fanger for the tips.

I have just started listening to them... Of course, like anyone listening to their first real monitors, I am very pleased. Right now they're below ear level, but I got them on my desk and not against the wall. So all I need is to set them on something to get them another foot or so higher, and I'll be set.

I was always told to keep enough distance from corners with monitors.

Hey Fab,

I have a simple to make wooden monitor stand plan for the Sp-5b. If you like, I will post it for you. They look nice too.

Fab,

Here is a simple diagram and photo of the stand:

They are really easy to make. You can use finishing nails to connect the pieces, or if you are super, extra, titts and ass (As I am) a pneumatic nailer...Argh Arggh!

I have some Tannoy Proto-J's and I just went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of those L-brackets...You can easily make your own out of it if theres some screw holes on the back...

Fab,

Glad that helped. Let us know how they work out when you get them built. (Sorry for the late reply, been away for a bit).
