HELP: Choosing a Bass Kick mic

I'd say no. That is more for a snare or tom. The low frewuency response falls too quick. I know in the description it claims kick, but definately not ideal.

If I had to choose a cheap bass drum mic, it would be a CAD KBM412.

tarnationsauce2: Thanks for your reply, I'll have a look at them and see how it goes.

Gnash5150: I'd love to get an AKG D112, but 200 is definitely outta my price range :(

Any other suggestions for a cheap but decent bass drum mic?

I know by reading yer post that price is an overwhelming part of your choices. You should consider a couple of things before choosing.

1. Style of drumming

2.Quality of the kik and the heads on it.

3.What you'll be amplifying this signal into.

A good quality kik sound comes from these factors as well as room, and the skills of the recordist.

A good kik mic will have a very fast rise time on the lower freqencies and wont have any artificial bumps in the mids with a slight rise in the highs. And it will handle large spl numbers well.

This alone obsoletes a LOT of the cheaper mics that are so-called 'kik' drum mics. There are choices.

This may start a war but if you spend your money on getting the drum right, then a plain ole SM57 will work well in most cases. Its not going to be ideal, but its not going to hurt the sound if its a quality sound to begin with.

Unless you're playing manical black death metal trash and fear rock.....then all bets are off.

I love the ATM 25. It'll work in every situation whereas a D112 is a mic that is not as versatile. It is automatic however. You stick it and forget it. Same for the Audix D6. Before anyone wants to argue, I own and use all three.

Another route to consider is the Audix D4. Can be found used around $100 and makes a great little kik mic. You want to mount it off center of the pedal...I use one for the 'click' exclusively and an ATM25 at the front head with a secret LDC out front for the boom. Works for me.

Man, there was a Cad for like, $49, I remeber using, a long, long time ago, when I didn't have a D112. It seemed to work back then. Might be worth checking out.

Thanks for all the replies...

hungovermorning: Yeah, it is cheap, I'd admit... But, I live in Australia, and there's no such thing as cheap gear here, and if there is, its hard to find, and nowhere near as cheap as it would get in the US. This is a huge problem for me, because what you consider cheap is pretty expensive here. I look on ebay and stuff but a lot of them don't ship overseas... unless they are an ebay store and in which case it wouldn't be 'as cheap'. I'll keep looking for them though...

surfmaster: the blue kickball?

Juggernaut: The mic looks good, but when I look at the price tag... 160USD is something I wanna avoid... I'll keep an eye out though

cavedog101: My drummer is a fan of the double kick... so I don't think that the SM57 will be a wise choice, but thanks for all your advice... I'll keep it in mind

Gnash5150: Thanks for that... I'll keep that in mind

I know Nady makes decent Ribbon mic's that are hard to beat for the price. Also Nady has a 7 piece drum mic package for about 170$ brand new in the box comes with all the mics you need to mic out a kit. I think if your gonna go cheap I would buy the 7 piece mic kit they offer.

Hey I'm from AUS and had the same problem you are having too. I ended up getting a superlux PRA-218B and it suits my need just fine. Also these is the FK-22? Phill Good swears by it and to get it shipped here the total is like $70 (that's mic included) mine was $117 (mic included)

Another plus for the ATM25. I currently have two and might consider more if I found them priced right! Great kick and bass amp mics.

Here is another idea:

Do you have a vocal (LDC) condensor?
If Do which one?

Maybe you could use the condensor on the outside of the resonant head. I do this all the time, for jazz it is the only way I mic a kick. One LDC right on the front head. For rock I'll put a RE-20, D112, or MD421 inside the kick aswell.

Just an idea so maybe you don't have to spend any money! :D :D

(btw I didn't realize that the ebay auction that you posted was in AUD, sorry :o )

Thanks for your replies...

twostone: Thanks, I'll keep a look out for them.

dwarf: Hey, good to know that someone else in this forum is from Aust as well. I'll have a look for the mic your talkin about, coz that price suits me :)

Juggernaut: No, I don't have an LDC... so yeah, that doesn't help. Thanks anyway

+1 for the superlux PRA-218B
I end up using mine 90% of the time for the kick.

I also have the superlux PRA-218a, If it gets used I end up putting it on the floor tom or bass cab.
