What’s’ so scary about these is that they don’t even have to know anything about recording equipment. They only have to notice that the controls and meters, which are clearly labeled in English, are upside down.
This brings back bad memories of when I bought a Teac reel-to-real a couple years ago, and the guy shipped it on its face with only a thin piece of Styrofoam packing material. The reel keepers that stick out of the reel tables had even poked two holes in the bottom of the box, and were bent over like nails – completely ruined.
I had even given him careful instructions about removing the plastic feet, because they can snap off in shipping. So he carefully removed them, put them in a plastic zip-lock bag as I asked, and then proceeded to put the unit in the box face down.
It was all I could do not to get on my horse and ride down to say “Wuzup.”
About 4 years ago, I bought a 34B from a "reputable" audio/video salvage place in Atlanta, (cant remember the name currently, but they're still selling stuff on Ebay). Anyway, this 34B was in fair condition, and it came in a hardshell roadcase! The problem was, that it was a Sony U-Matic road case, and the 34B flopped around in there with no support or supplemental packing!! Like Beck's,... this reel/reel had both reel tables smashed in, with one spindle smashed all the way to the side like a bent nail,... just as Beck described,... and there was a characteristic imprint of two "tits" in the foam of the road case. Plus,... the head cover was damaged. In the turnaround, I gave the AV Wholesaler a piece of my mind, and he even promised to pay for repairs, but I didn't follow up,... (which is my fault). What I did, was I ordered a new reel table from Tascam, at about $65 a pop,....
and the reel table has sat in it's shipping bag, while the damaged 34B has sat in it's U-matic road case, ever since!!!
I guess I've let all my "fixit" projects go a little long, eh. 4-years and counting!
Anyway, as much as we want to rag on UPS, it's always the sellers fault for inadequate packing, if equipment gets damaged.
... AVFORSALE in Atlanta,... was the name. Watch out when buying any large/heavy gear from them, even if it advertises the gear comes with a road case!!!
PS: with the 34B @ $435 and the new reel table at $65,... that's a 400-smacker loss I took, in a flash!! Now, it's on my endless "fixit" list!!
