I just bought a MOTU828mkII. I have not even taken it out of the box yet. It has a headphone connection. Can I monitor by plugging headphones directly into the headphone jack, or do I need a headphone amp?

A headphone jack means that you plug headphones into it.

Correct ... you can monitor right off of that jack. The 828mkII also allows you to have the headphone jack mimic any other output pair.
Spend some quality time with your manual ... any questions you have ... I'll be happy to try and help.
I'm an 828mkII'er myself

headphone amps are only needed if you want to power more than one headphone at a time. In that case, you run a stereo cable from the headphone jack on your (whatever it is), to the headphone amp, and plug multiple headphones into the amp.

I would have to disagree with everyone here. The headphone jack would be okay to use if you just want to monitor the overall mix just as you would through the speakers. If you are wanting to allow the musican to monitor through headphones while recording you'll want to use the outputs on one of the 8 channel outs. The reason for this is because you'll want to hear it prefader so when adjusting any levels or whatnot you won't blast the musicians ears. Besides, the 828mk11 has the CueMix DSP mixer on it (which I think is a cool little feature) and it lets you monitor to any four output pairs that you want. You can find some inexpensive cueamps pretty easily. But of course, it all depends on how you plan on recording. You might find using the headphones out is easiest. Although, if what crankz1 says is right and you can turn the headphone jack into another output, then i guess just use that. I haven't had much experience with the 828 though....so you may wish to ignore all that I just wrote. Good luck.
