So much critical listening.
That's a good and valid point, but I'm in the place where I actually need to learn new techniques to get better. What I play now I play pretty darn well, me thinks. But I don't get better, if you know what I mean. ;)

Then why are you here? ;)

To raise breast cancer awareness.

PS-I use HomeStudio 2004 Xl. Or will, once I get it all figured out!

Sounds like a good cause.

But wouldn't raising breast awareness be better? :D

I think most men are already aware of them! At least I am!

I have never had anything against being made more aware of breasts........

I never like anything I do whether I do it in one night or a month :) even the few things ive done that I once liked I soon had to go back and change something.
THE THINGs i LIKE TO DO THE MOST
are ALWAYS WHAT i CANT do very well :D :D :D :)

Go figure

Buying more gear solves everything.....

It placates me when I don't feel like making music, it interests me doing the research on stuff I want, I pretend-buy on ebay when I have no money, I constantly chase after sounds I couldn't reproduce even if I had the gear, it fools me into thinking I can buy my sound.

I love buying gear it has become my obsession and quickly satisfies and alludes me in to thinking if I just had that (insert gear of desire) I could sound more professionial, musicians will want to record at my studio, people will like me, they will pay me more money because I have the best stuff....

Ah the dilusion continues, when will it all end.

Seriously though, I have gotten some almost pro tracks in Sonar, if I just had a real distressor and maybe some Mackie 824s though I could really create a pro sound....dooh!

1) 10 years
2) 6 hours

the last mix i did was for a reggae dancehall song. i set the volume, EQ, and panning in the first 3 hours. then the next day i did the compression and fx. it had to be done, and thats all the time i had... its crisp and the lead vocals sit nicely between the slightly panned bass and kick. that was big lesson in not over-mixing.

i spent another 5 or 6 hours mastering the 5 song EP on the 3rd and final day.

a friend of mine called me last night so I could hear the DJ playing the song at a local club. the artist and I put 75 copies of the CD in a local DJ record pool. one day i'm going to make some money. maybe even enough money to recoup the money i've spent.

Mixing in Sonar

I'm very happy with the mixes I've done in both Sonar 2.2 and 3.0. Having the ability to completely automate my mixes has been a liberating for me. Instead of standing at my mixer trying to manually boost volume and eq levels at the right time, I can sit back and listen to the mix. I'm able to do mixes that I would not normally be able to do by myself and evaluate them better. I'm now able to complete several variations on a mix in less time than doing one mix manually. All the songs at my website were mixed in Sonar if anyone's curious.

1. How long did it take you to get a mix you were truly happy with?

It took 4 long years.

2. How long did it take you to make that mix?

It took about 3 weeks. The sad part of it all is that the mix was done about 2 years ago. I haven't been able to come close to what I did back then. It's rather frustrating. When I listen to the song now I hear things I would want to do different, but I know if I go back into that mix I will ruin it.
