hello everyone, just wondering if anyone would have a good idea for some new pickups for me. I've almost finished a new guitar, all i need are some killer face melting ear bleeding pickups.-with good definition.

my setup =
custom maple thru-neck body (explorer-ish)
peavey ultragainplus high=10,mid=2,bass=8 all gain knobs=10-run thru an ampeg 4x12

i play kinda hardcore style, 90% hardcore 10%metal?, maybe a little crusty, not too many solos, no thuggin on e.
i was thinking of the 81-85 combo, but i hear those are pretty sterile sounding,
right now im using some generic jacksons in a vester(=crap) i could go for more gain..
any ideas would be helpful

oh yea- theyll be humbuckers

thanks

I have a guitar with the 81-85 combo, and I don't think they are sterile sounding. I guess it depends on your amp, though. Check out anything by Zack Wylde. I believe he uses the 81-85 a lot.

I would think the EMGs would be a good choice because they are very high output, but at the same time they have excellent definition between the notes. They're not mushy/smeary sounding like many other high output pickups.

I like EMG's sometimes, too. But if you want a different spin on a great modern higain sounding pickup try out a set of PRS #7 pickups. I had a set in a Les Paul and in a Schecter and they were outrageous. They could scream and really hit the lows, too. They have alot of bite, and they just sound mean and evil. I'd imagine they'd be great for what you want.

I'm a Gibson paf stye guy myself, and really love Burstbuckers. But I don't think they're for what you want.

No No No No!!!

You should get a Tony Iommi Signature pickup, manufactured by Gibson.. They're awesome for just about about everything.. A guitar with EMG's tends to just sound like a guitar with EMG's.. but the Iommi sounds different in every guitar.. High output and GREAT for metal.. If you just get the chrome pickups.. a set of 2 would probably run you about 260$..

Yeah, have you looked for those? Around the ETSG forum there are about 5 guys who had them on order, and Gibson has for some reason been delaying them for over 6 months. Not an Iommi to be found. If you happen to see then "in stock" online, make sure you call first. Cause I don't think they are actually available. I heard they were discontinued.

I use a Carvin M22 in my Les Paul. Bought it back in about 85' and have had a few others too. Just put it back in and it sounds great!!! High output and good midrange crunch. Doesn't get sloppy in the low end like most high gain p-ups.
I work at Dean guitars here in Tampa and we just sent a shipment of Dimebag guitars to M.F. It has the Duncan Dimebag model in it. Man!!... those things cook!!! Too much for my style(classic rock and 80's metal) Maybe it would work for you though. Good luck in your search.

The Seymor Duncan active pickups sound quite nice, listen to the audio samples at their website (www.seymouduncan.com). I don't know if that is what you're looking for, but maybe you'll find something you like.

Ahh damn it all to hell... they were awesome pickups.. I didn't hear that about them.. However.. Carvin pickups are good.. and the Duncan Designed "Dimebucker" is pretty good too.. There's a large range of things that you could have.. all depends on what you want I suppose.

What kind of bridge are you running on it? (Hard tail , Floyd...)

If you're using a floyd, I'd suggest the Duncan PA-Tb2....it's basically an SH-6 with a bit more output and string spacing for the floyd......I've got these in two of my "Shreader" axes, .....after a very long list of trial pickups, these are the ones that stayed.

I believe the tony iommi pickup is the gibson classic '57. I dont think its what you want. sounds very classic rock. I use it and love it though.

Iommi isn't a classic57. It's way hotter and crazy wound, It's also epoxy potted like an EMG is. the Iommi is the second hottest output pickup Gibson makes...second to the 500T.

for dimarzio, i'd say tone zone. emg, 81. duncan, there's lots of hot pickups...i'd say the jb is good for what you need though.

you might try one of those gibson dirtyfingers humbuckers. they're insanely high output like those emg pickups.

thanks for all the responses,

to WERNER 1's question, it will be a hardtail - strings thru the body..

i probably need something easier to find then the 500t or Iommi, since i was hoping to spend less than 200 on a pair...

any opinion on kent armstrongs?

I have a 500T I'll sell you cheap. How's $20 +shpping? I liked it at first; but later realized it is all about output and not so much on warm tone and clarity. I switched to a JB and LOVE that one. Still has good output, but it sounds so sweet, driven or clean!

Anyway, the 500T is yours if you want it. I can set up an ebay buy it now thing or whatever you want...if you want it.

I really can't speak for the other pickups, but I've been running active EMGs for about 15 years and really like the control I have over the sound. They are not sterile...in fact they broaden the spectrum of sounds you can get in a heavy/metal environment. However, I would not use them for blues or clean playing since they have too much dynamic when playing clean.
