As far as I know, sharks aren't family oriented. As soon as they're born they're on their own. Mama doesn't stick around to protect and nurture them. I actually got to watch a little tiny shark pup gnaw at a whole live mullet I dropped just below the surface just to tease him. The mullet was twice his size, yet the little shark showed no fear in getting after it. Some species do hunt in packs, although I think most sharks are pretty solitary. You may find quite a few different types of sharks in one area, but it's not because they choose to live that way. They just go where the food is. This again is as far as I can tell. I'm no expert. These are just things I've kinda figured out by fishing for them so much. They also aren't man-killers. If you swim with bloody steak in your pocket, there's a chance you'll get bit. If a shark does bite a human, it's 99% of the time an "exploratory" bite. And an overwhelming majority of shark bites are very minor injuries. Sharks very rarely, if ever, hunt humans to eat. Humans simply aren't a part of their daily diet. Swim next to a seal and the seal will get eaten before you do every single time. More people are stung by jellyfish and stingrays than bitten by sharks, yet sharks are easily the most feared. Just don't act like bait and you'll probably never even see a shark in the surf.................until he's ripping your leg off. :)
Then how come the momma shark in Jaws 2 trys to .......:p

I love to watch the documentaries on sharks....they are fascinating creatures and are due respect. Some of the documentaries claim, the reason of increased attacks through the years, has to do with more people in the oceans and possibly decreasing of coral reefs...I don't know, I have taped so many of these shows about sharks, whales, seals, and sea snakes and such, that I have trouble keeping it all straight. I never tire of viewing them. Nature is a vast source of ever changing variety and amazement. I think it would be awesome to play some music, as the sun kisses the sea good night....it would all be good.

On most documentaries, they say the reason surfers are often a target, is because they resemble seals lying atop the boards...flaying their arms and legs and something about color too.

They may not be "hunting" humans...but I don't think, I would trust them to not eat me...

My favorite thing at seaworld, was the shark tank, but felt sorry for them being in a tank.

How long have you been fishing for shark Greg? I am assuming, you fish for them because of the fight...?? Have you ever eaten a shark, you have caught...? I have tasted shark. I have no idea what kind of shark or what ocean it was caught in...but it really was nasty.

With your bike and the shark fishing and musical talents....adrenaline junkie comes to mind.;)

Being one who is fascinated by things a bit on the dangerous side, while possessing common sense as to the outcome if pursued...I find myself frustrated....until I just do it !!!

So...beings that you named this tune Hammerhead...was it named before or after you finished it and was the name inspired by the feel of the music...or the music inspired by the name...?

I can't wait to hear about, another of your ocean, shark fishing adventures....:)

This shark fishing must be a Texas thing:D Up here we hunt squirls or as we like to call them "tree sharks!!!" AKA "the pine cone killer!" :p

I've had the basic "verse" riff of this song in my pocket for years. With it being Summertime and me fishing just about every weekend at the beach, I decided to build a song around it. I made the arrangement with a shark attack in mind, sort of. I originally was gonna record it with fuzzier guitars to give it more of a surf-punk feel, but I liked the traditional clean surf sound better for this one. Anyway, so I had the basic riff of the song, and had the idea of a shark attack, so I started thinking of how it would feel to get attacked by a shark and live through it, so I made the song have 4 basic parts. You have the main riff which is basically the "verse" which gives me the idea of cautiously swimming around. Then it goes into the tremolo part with the toms which kind of gives me the feel of a shark stalking it's prey. From there it leads to a slightly more "cheerful" sounding riff that I envision meaning that the attackee got away from the attacker, only to have it start all over again, which is how sharks operate. They give you a little bump before they rip you apart. Anyway, so the fast-picking verse is like a "okay here we go again, but now I'm scared" kinda thing. And here comes the shark again. So the whole process starts over but now it leads into the "tom-solo" in the middle which is sort of like you floating out there panicking and having no idea where Mr Toothy is. The double-time part is the attack. The chord progression going up from D to F is post-attack. You're checking yourself out. You're alive, but in shock. From there it could be anything. The arrangement is the same but in a higher key. You're swimming back to shore with one leg, one arm, one butt-cheek, whatever, hoping the shark dioesn't come back. At the end, the song winds back down from F to D. You're back on the beach, bloody but alive. I called it "Hammerhead" for no real reason. It's just a freaky shark. They're very aggressive.

I know that's a lot of goofiness for one little surf instrumental, but that's how i see it. :p

I've been shark fishing for about 4 years now. Each summer I get a little better and better at it. I've eaten shark a few times. It's okay, but I fish them for the fight. There's better fish to eat out there, but not many better fighters. I'm serious about catching and releasing though. I have ropes, bolt-cutters, pliers, everything at the ready incase I land a big one. I want to get them to the beach, take the pic, and get them back into the water. A lot of people want to kill them just for the hell of it because they're sharks. I see 4 or 5 foot sharks dead on the beach every now and then. I'm no PETA queer, but that shit makes me sick. Sharks are freaking fantastic animals. They're amazing.

You're right about them attacking things that look like prey. A surfer on a board would look like a big seal to a shark from underneath. That's not the sharks fault though. They're sharks. They eat, and fuck. That's all they do. They live in the oceans. If someone came into my house looking like a hamburger, I'd probably eat them too. ;)

Just got back from vacation yesterday...catching up on my listening....
Wow!!! This is fantastic Greg...not much more to add that hasen't been said in the many previous post;)....your one talented musician!!

Thanks a lot man. :)

i haven't listened to surf music since i was a kid. good song Greg. took me back to my childhood for a moment :)

Yah....I agree with you...they are amazing!! One of the most fascinating water creatures in the ocean. The ocean is such a mysterious and wonderous world of it's own(I have been, just not enough!!!) It can induce a type of calm, I would think no other part of nature can....and turn around and provide thrills beyond imagination(I get all freaky just looking at pics of it!!). Exhilarating beauty, possessing the power to take one from inner soul soothing...to a most dangerous and deadly encounter on this earth!!! Awesome!!!

It is obvious, why *Hammerhead* is so good.....your ability of imagery put to sound....your narrative, of how you created it, is just as good a read....as the music is a listen, which invokes impressions, of all that you spoke of ...and you did it with a coolness to rule.

I just love a great narration....I have saved it for my collection of "Hammerheads and Other Sharky Tales";)

Goofy makes for the best surf tunes...and toons too. I love it. Man, you have one, imaginative bwain "Literally"...to go along with all that musical talent!!! It is very interesting, to hear how other people come to create, the songs they do. Interaction with nature...life events...sorrow...joy...adventures...silliness.....riffs in one's pockets....

What shall you do...when the "big one" bites your bait...and starts to take you immediately waaaay out to sea....which, I assume they could...would you cut the line or stay with 'em for the ride...?

It also sickens me, those who kill, just for the sport of it. If what you kill is not for the purpose of the balance of things(food, clothing, over-population)...or a survival kill(you or someone else is in dire danger)...then don't kill it!

....unless it's a deadly snake....:p

I would never, think anyone to be a PETA queer, because they respect life, whether it be human or animal. Sharks...just as Grislys, Tigers.. or any other pedator, that is dangerous to man are a very important part to our Eco system, including a wonderful enjoyment for us and as you worded it.."They eat, and fuck. That's all they do. They live in the oceans. If someone came into my house looking like a hamburger, I'd probably eat them too". ...damn that was good!! You did however, leave the other half of that analysis, hanging in the air....?....:D

If I were any kind of fish or animal....I would be a lot like a shark....or a dragon. Only killing to eat....but I WOULD be a man hunter.....

Some good stuff Greg and thank you for taking the time to enchant me!!

True:)

Haha. You're welcome.

If I ever hook into one that's too big to handle from the kayak, I'd just cut the line. 5 bucks worth of leader and hook isn't worth the damage a big toothy can do to your reel, rod, kayak, or self. I've seen very experienced guys catch 6 foot Bull Sharks from kayaks, so I at least know it's possible. Anything bigger than that would probably be too much to handle. They most definitely take you for a ride. The key is to keep them in front of you. You gotta keep the rod and kayak pointed in the same direction. Keep the rod forward, and he can pull you anywhere. Let him get to either side while he's still fighting, and you'll probably go over.........which obviously could be really bad. I've fought some smaller 3-5 footers for 30-40 minutes before. You gotta tire them out. Once they get tired you can work them over to the side of the kayak. From there you can roll them over and get the hook out. Rolling a shark on its back sort of puts them into a trance so you can deal with them. The key is to do whatever you have to do without dragging him up into the boat with you. I keep large pliers, and huge divers knife, and bolt cutters with me at all times. Usually the pliers are all you need to unhook a shark. We use circle-hooks which have a great hookup rate while being easy to remove. They're a bitch to bait though. I use the heavy-duty knife to cut the tail off of stingrays or if I ever need to get defensive. I haven't had to stab anything yet. I've had to just cut the hook in half with the bolt-cutters a few times. Sometimes they just don't want to let you unhook them. Cut the hook and it will just fall out eventually while causing the shark no harm.

Damn, I should write a book. :p

Now where did I put that old hamburger costume??????:D

F.S.
:D..Well, that was actually Greg's line....but you know the Oscar Myer song....Everybody wants to be an Oscar Myer wiener....just insert hamburger in place of wiener....:D

I already read my instant notification email regarding "buns" chicken:D

Now I'm contemplating the implications that greg actually said that:confused::eek:

:)

Freud....:D...no words can help you now....The hamburgerlar has been loosed....:D

Greg.....Yes...you should write a book!!

All of this Sharky info is interesting. I've never seen a documentary on this type of fishing before. You should consider doing one...eh..to accompany that "Best Seller" book, you are going to write.;)

I just Googled and found a few links on shark fishing...Kayak and others....one very interesting one.......:Dhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbGxnS8DACk&mode=related&search=

Thanks Greg...now I will stop hijacking your thread, for my own pleasure!:)

LOL,
Daisy Duke is probably that 350 pound fat guy I saw on TV that answers the phone at 1-900-eat-cork.

Or not! :D

This is a joke of course!
