Sounds well recorded, and played. Nice acoustic tones. I am not big on the hand clap thing but for this it definately gave me that feeling of sitting in a bar. Song is good, i hate that feeling because i grew up in bars with my alcoholic father. And i will never drink or go to a bar now so the mood is killed for me. Good Job.

Dug and still Digging... Love the grip on the acoustic, powerful and authoritive especially in the trills. Tone captured like the wood itself. Good balance between guit and voice. Sounds like about 15 to 20 ft away, live. Smooth, clean and clear.
Got a Redbone vein to me.

This song should stay much the way it is.It does'nt need a bass,because your voice does a good job of giving the song some low end.
This song reminds me of ghosts and gypsy's,has a very haunting quality to it.If it were mine,I would put a really spooky violin in a
couple of spots and leave it at that.
Good job ,this tune moves me.

This is a little off the topic of Tom's excellent tune, but thought I'd share a kind of amusing discovery on my part:

I was listening to "Townie" while my girlfriend was on the bed reading and she perked up and said "hey that reminds me of the soundtrack to 'Nightmare Before Christmas'" (one of her faves).

I said "yeah? I hear a lot of Kurt Weill in this one."

She didn't know Weill, so I tried to sort of describe the style. She insisted that Tom must have been a fan of the Nightmare soundtrack. So I get on allmusic.com and discover that the guy who did the music and most of the singing for Nightmare is this Danny Elfman guy who I always see in movies credited for music scores, etc.

The allmusic.com entry mentions Elfman's most obvious influence as being Kurt Weill, which vindicates my girl

Then I do some further research which suddenly reveals that this Elfman guy was the singer in Oingo Boingo and all of a sudden I get that the same guy who sings the part of Jack in Nightmare Before Christmas is the same guy who did "Dead Man's Party" and the theme to "Weird Science" - that hilariously bad 80s movie where Anthony Michael Hall builds his own woman (that "don't hate me because I'm beautiful" chick).

So Sluice's tune has led to me reconsidering the merits of Oingo Boingo - a band which I had previously only thought of in terms of cheesball 80s party music. I've been listening to them all week.

The moral of the story? Um... sometimes it takes one tune to open your eyes to another?

Maybe that's it. I dunno, but I thought it was an amusing series of connections.

Oh, and I still love this song (Tom's).

This is very good! In my head, I'm actually hearing some slide in there...haha the Dobro mouth trumpet is great!

Haven't read all of the responses here but the recording sounds crystal clear on this end. It's strange hearing your vocal sound on something that is this, well, for lack of a better term, normal sounding...meaning not many dynamics vocal wise like on many of your tunes. Your voice is very distinct on this and really helps the tune along.

I dig those hand-claps. Kind of a cool simple arrangement that works very well for this (except I'm still hearing that slide in there...)

I like this one a lot! Maybe this could be the genesis of our next challenge ... completely write and record a song while drunk. Now that would be a trip to see what everyone comes up with (as long as nobody went out driving afterward...I would hate to be responsible for somebody's demise over a homerec challenge ... )

The hand claps work, but I was thinking finger snapping myself. I just think it would have a more intimate feel, IMHO.

I though you could have layed down one of your smokin acoustic guitar solos in place of the mouth solo. It still sounds great to me - I just totally dig your guitar playing and need to hear it!

I like it. Someone mentioned violin and now that's what I hear as it replays in my head. I can't get the violin out of the new mix in my cranium, it's burned in.

Guitar sound very good and nice verb. on it. what verb. and mics? Vocal sounds good too. I'm thinking condensors w/ preamps. Mix is fine.

Groucho- I'll have to check out some of that Kurt Weill. Your wife spotted my love for Elfman though. The man is a bottomless well. I had no idea until I read your post that he was lurking around in this song. But I think she's right. Jack Skellington could be singing this song! Cheers! Oh ya, you should also check out Boingo, which is one of Elfman's post- Oingo Boingo projects. There's some good stuff there too. I don't listen to enough music outside of this board, but I really should start listening to Elfman more.

Analytical- Had quite a few alcoholics in my family too. This tune is a very sarcastic picture of a night on the town, and points a finger at the stupid things we do when we're drunk. But then, I don't see anything wrong with a little fun here and there either. So I tried to be as honest about it as possible. Thanks.

SHEPPARDB.- The guitar is a $350 Seagull made in Canada(don't know that model) and this was miced with an Octava MC012 in front of the neck and a Studio Projects C3 in front of-and about 16 inches above the soundhole. Thank you for checking it out man.

caryindy- Thanks man. By the time this hits a CD that "mouth trumpet" shit will be gone. I was just goofing around on a Saturday and I didn't even realize Dobro had done that for some reason. Oh well...hopefully he's not pissed. I'm sure he did it better than this anyway.

junplugged- The verb is Waves and the mics are Octava and Studio Projects. I've been using them for quite a while now and I like them. But it would be fun to try something new I think. As for the violin, Studioviols offered to play some, but he's offered a lot of people to play some so I'm not sure how he's going to find the time. Thanks for checking this out man.

TexRoadkill- Thanks a lot. I was impressed with your recording of that band. I don't think I'd do as well with someone's band without a lot more experience, especially with the drums. I appreciate your stopping in here for this little thing. Take care!
