Hi there, have any of you folks got an idea how I can attain the guitar sound of sixties beat groups. I'm thinking in particular of Irish band Them (Van Morrison's band) in songs like "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Mystic Eyes", and also the Beatles in songs like "Day Tripper". I just love that sound. Any ideas?

I don't know much about any of those songs in particular, but either a Rickenbacker or a Strat would be my suggestion to get a retro tone.

Epiphone Casino

The old Epiphone Casino was a popular instument back in those days. They are a thin hollow body archtop electric. Gibson also makes one (don't know the model).

Check out this link at MF for a John Lennon 65 Casino.

I am actually the proud owner of mid to late 60's epi Casino that I inherited from my grandfather. It is realy a cool guitar. It has it's own unique sound to it.

The link that I gave you is obviously a signature model. You can get a standard model cheaper.

The Gibson equivalent of the Epi Casino is an ES 330. It looks like a 335, but is hollow, doesn't have the solid block of wood running through it.

Other Beatles guitars are a Gretsch Country Gentleman and a Gibson J-160.

The amp of choice was probably a Vox AC 30.

One of the differences in sound between today's studios and those of the Sixties is the quality of the mix board. In those days they were all-tube (valves) and part of the sound the engineers and producers would get could be acheived by overdriving the board.

Today's digital boards just won't so that.
