I just got an Omni Studio and cannot get the guitar software distortion effects to sound right (to me). I am brand new to recording and still pushing all the buttons and flipping all the switches to see what happens. I have converted to .wav and played through both sets of speakers and it sounds better but still cannot seem to get a good "cabinet" sound. I have been considering real studio monitors but also am wondering if devices like POD or J-Station might be the more logical "next step".

those s/w effects are usually not very good. I've tried a few, but they just couldn't be used for the real guitar sound...have you got any pedals?? you should get a processor or something I reckon...I've got a BOSS GT-6, eventhough I'm not the best of guitarists, I bought it, coz there is some stuff you gotta have to play guitar...not saying that you have to have a BOSS, but certainly some pedals ;)

Try the Behringer V-Amp 2.0, that's their latest one..
It's a Virtual guitar AMPlifier, which means it emulates guitar amplifiers..

Next to that it also got basic effects a guitarist needs (chorus, flanger, phaser, delay, reverb, wah, ...)

This baby plugs in direct in the mixing table/DAW/your computer's soundcard. A second cable goes into your amp, so you can actually hear what you play.

Do a search on this site on V-amp, see what turns up..
Many people are happy with their equipment, others aren't.
It's very personal, but it's a budget friendly upgrade to your gear and IT ROCKS !

I play bass and guitar and used the V-Amp for both, hell I even recorded a lead vocal, and that track was awesome.

If you want to record some good sounding guitar the best thing to do is to mic the guitar cabinet. Your source is the most important link in your recording chain, fix it. There is a lot of controversy about pods and simulators and you could possibly find what your looking for there but I say there is nothing like the real thing. Get yourself a good sounding amp or two and go from there. You also want to take a look at recording your guitar clean and then adding your effects later, G/L.
