Man .... is that one of those old tubed Kustoms?
I'd love to find one of those.

I don't think that any of the vintage Kustom amps were tube, although the modern Kustom company did put out a tube head recently that aped the tuck & roll look. Anyway, mine is just military grade, old skool solid state. Not a whole lot of "tone" in the Fender/Marshall sense, but a lot of power and a sweet clean, ie transparent, tone.

cheers

Billy S.

The old Kustom's were all solid state. I and the other guitar player in my band both played Kustom 200's for a few years. They gave us a unique sound that we both liked. The real bonus with the Kustom's were that they were roadie proof. There was an amp that was produced around that time that looked like a Kustom and was all tube, Plush was the brand name. They sounded good for about a week .... it was all down hill from there.

I got my 40W Traynor Combo last night ... I love this thing. It has an old style celestion speaker in it. It should really rock after the speaker breaks in. This amp really sound good clean and has a great overdrive channel for fusion.

I haven't been this excited in a long time. I just wish I had more time to play.

Favorite Amp. You means Favorite AmpS

I'm new here. If you want my favorite clean sound it's a LANEY GH50L class A all tube head (Tony Iomme uses these in the 100 watt version). This amp flies under the radar. It's the best and warmest clean sound I have owned. Very similar to an old 30 watt Hiwatt Bulldog. You're not sure if it's breaking up just a little on the attack. Full sounding low-end. When I play the first note after plugging in, my gut says "oh, that's nice". It must be paired with a decent 4-12 or 4-10 enclosed cabinet to sound right, otherwise - Dud. I like it's sound best with 5881 power tubes.

I have never owned a Fender Twin (Many great players perfer this one) but it sounds a little too hard (?) or cold for my taste. (but who am I)

My favorite distorted sound is the Soldono. I don't own one but when I played through it, it sounded like the overdrive I was looking for but just didn't know it.

Crate M-50

I love my Crate... post Mackie buy-out ... sounds better than a Marshall or Mesa at the store and in my studio. (They let me try em out)

Pretty amazing that an interesting thread about who likes what amps could degenerate into a namecalling argument.
This is what makes the internet so entertaining. :D
Here here. I threw my TV out my second story window 8 years ago. Never went back so this is as good as it gets!
Bob, is that amp one of the convertables?

Crate V508
Fender Twin BF
Marshall Studio 15
Yamaha 5012
Looking at buying a ValveKing or Penta (Haven't decided)

No way am I reading this entire thread before posting. Anything but a CRATE. I hate Crate amps with a passion. I've known band after emo band who swear by Crate, and they ALWAYS sound bad. The only exception is the line of tube amps, but even those have less-than-good-sounding digital FX, which are the devil. Mesa Boogie all the way, if I had cash, but I don't so I use an old Roland Jazz Chorus.

Hey, you, shut up, I love Crate.
Then again, I'm not a tone fanatic like you.
But no dissing Crate. It was my first amp, my most loyal amp, and it gets the sound I want.
Isn't that sort of the point?
Love,
Hayley Jane

Ouch, wife. Ouch. Ouch.
It gets the sound you want, but not the sound I want, so... God, I can't be mean to you, I'm marrying you. Dammit.

Once you've used one, you'll never use anything else.

I second that.

fenders do rock for a clean tone though

I've used boogies and never felt any magic.

Yeah, well... ::mumbles::... maybe you're not a real person! So there!

My favorite one I ever owned -- Genz-Benz El Diablo 100c. Crazy amp! Just sold it last night :( because I am in the middle of moving and it's a huge amp to lug around. I miss that amp already!

'68 Fender Bassman. 2x12 Fender cab. Breathes kinda loud, but great twang for my honky tonkin' Tele.

methinks my favorite amp is whatever i'm using at the time, and when i change amps, i change my mind. I'm easily convinced...

Roll my own. See 'em here (not spam, just one of my passions that [just barely] supports my amp habit).

If I had to pick a favourite, it would be a slightly tweaked Marshall JTM45, though I really did dig a 50 watt Plexi I built (LOUD!); come to that, I've loved every 18 watt Marshall build I've done.

I'm currently really liking the full, fat clean-but-dirty sounds of the modified Deluxe Reverb head I just built. Miss the kerrang! of the Marshall styles, though.
I run the Deluxe Reverb through a Weber California 15" cab, and it sounds HUGE.

Plan on building either an AC15/AC30 variant or a Matchless DC30 clone in the near future.

The only thing to do with a Crate and a Boogie is pack the Boogie inside the Crate for shipping so it won't get damaged.

Haha, signed.

I voted Boogie. I just cant get over the features on my triple rect.

I think Hughes and Kettner would be right up there for me though. If anyone's tried a Triamp, they'd know where I was coming from.

Trace Elliot G-RP3 preamp

There are two versions: one also has built in effects, otherwise identical. 3 channels of well-balanced, i.e., great clean, smooth crunch and sustaining lead. Also has a convincing 'Metal' mode in channel 3, although I don't use this myself because of the music I do. Input gain for channel 1 and 2 is through a 12AX7; channel 3 is solid state all the way.

Footswitch offers footswitch access to channels 1, 1+2, 2, 2+3, or 3 only. 2 additional switches toggle the internal effects and a second activates an external loop device. The switches DO wear out; I've had 2 incidents of a switch going out - once during a live performance, and could have been royally fucked - but had a soldering iron at hand and replaced the switch in 15 minutes and all was dandy again.

Stereo XLR DI out: this has always sounded fine - not fantastic as a FOH only sound, but really opens up your sound if it's in addition to what's coming out of your stage amp.

No MIDI unfortunately, so unless you want to switch between different internal reverbs, delays on-the-fly (something I can't be arsed to do live), you are stuck with a single selected internal effect.

Built-in tuner. But strangely, it's always kaput (and I've seen 5 examples of the unit, own 3). Can't vouch for the quality of the tuner even if it is working.

2 additional 1/4" jacks on the rear panel allow connection of global volume pedal control, and a second volume pedal for 'crunch' control on channel 2 (withough affecting overall volume too much). Don't use these myself, but someone could.

Front panel is in the TE tradition of green illumination, and looks sweet on stage (doesn't really help you see the controls any better though).

I usually go into the FX return of the stage amp to bypass its own preamp.

Can be picked up for about 150 dollars used (they are about 15 years old).

A really well realised design, with some bells and whistles, but still straightforward enough to be a great live box.

Yep, the Triamp is another good one. Nice and solid, difficult to get a really bad sound out of it. Great footpedal control.

Orange!

Orange amps are great.. have been mentioned already. Friggin a lot of $$$ however.
