I guess it depends on what's more important---having multiple patterns or being able to shape the sound to suit your needs. You can severely EQ the signal from a ribbon mic and it will generally hold together. Do the same to the high end of any LDC and you'll get harsh peaks and troughs that sound awful.
Thus, I tend to think of ribbons as being much more versatile than LDCs. They're generally more tolerant of bad rooms, have orders of magnitude lower self noise (but they require a good pre---not super high gain so much as not noisy), and... well, get one and you'll see.
They aren't ideal for live use---they're a fair bit more delicate than condensers---but for studio use, I find that I use them a lot more than my LDCs, though I do find tube condensers somewhat interesting.
