I am definitely in for a couple or a handful, depending on my self-control. I'm wondering about the
ACM-6801T
ACM-6802T
LDC Tube Condensers. The calculator on this site says that the Signal to noise ratio would be 81 db, not 78db
http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-transferfactor.htm

I'm no expert at this, so I was wondering is there some other factor that would change the Signal to noise ratio where the SPL is 135, self noise is 13db, and the sensitivity is 20mv/Pa? Just wondering if this calculator is using the wrong formula.

There are many variables to consider such as diaphram thickness, tube circuit, etc. that will affect S/N ratio

Count me in for a pair of ribbon mics!

I have the HRM-14B which is an outstanding mic! I already ordered a Lundall transformer which should arrive today and can post pre/post mod audio files if anyone is interested.

We should also consider a group buy for the Lundahl transformer LL2912 which fits into each of these ribbon mics.

To be more precise: I'd be interested in either the HRM-5, 10, 14, but not the HRM-8.

I was looking at that LDC tube condenser too. I'm definitely in for a ACM-6802T.

Does anybody know how much nicer tubes cost and if changing them out actually makes that big of a difference?

makes a noticeable difference to me. i've been swapping out the 12at7's in my modded Nadys for nicer GE JAN 6072a tubes. It lowers the output, increase the headroom and cleans up the midrange frequencies to my ears. The type of tube you use will make a difference (e.g. swapping a 6072a, 12ay7 for a 12ax7)

I also just swapped out the stock JJ 12ax7 and GE JAN 6072a tube in my UA m610 for a NOS Valvo 12ax7 and a NOS 5 Star 6072a tube. Also a very nice difference.

Giganova... where are you getting "HRM" part number? Everything I'm seeing starts with "ACM"

Hey Chance,

Just finished viewing your site. Great testimony! I'm a fan of Benny Hester. Calvary Chapel was such a huge part of the "Jesus Movement". My all time favorites were Keith Green and 2nd Chapter of Acts.

I also PM you with a few questions.

oh and you can find nos tubes on ebay or from a whole bunch of tube sellers with on-line stores. some prices as examples (you may get better or worse deals): i've paid between $20-30 for the GE JAN 6072a's shipped, $40 for the 5 star NOS 6072a, $40 for the Valvo 12ax7, about $12 for a EH 6072a tube, $25 for an Ei Gold Elite 12ax7, found some unbranded JJ 12ax7's for about $10 shipped, and so on and so forth.
YMMV

is the difference between the ACM-12 and the ACM-13 just cosmetic? Do they have the same ribbon inside? Also, are the mics with prices the only ones available for this GB, or will there be updates?

The 12 and 13 have different internal acoustics which really affect the charactor or color. They do have the same basic motor tho. The 13 would be easier to get into for mod work. (more internal room)

I am trying to see how much the 6802 would cost with the case and shock mount, as well as the shock mount alone

I was referring to the model numbers in the first post on the first page, and the corresponding pictures that you can also find later down on the first page of this thread. I know its rather confusing as tons of distributors sell the same mics with different model names.

General comment (to all):

So are we buying ribbon or condensor mics here? I'm a bit confused that the thread started with ribbon mics only, but the last few posts were about LDCs  If we can't even agree on a type of mic this group buy effort is doomed.

I think you are talking about group buys from previous years. The current mics are listed here: http://www.the-musicians-workshop.com

Giganova, If you back up to where the thread shifts from, I believe 2006 to a couple of weeks ago and read from there, you'll see this is a different GB than the original.

I assumed it was included with the price since it says it was included on the page, but I don't mind paying extra for a shockmount and case. I'd prefer to get one with it if possible.

This GB is not limited to only one mic, you now have a choice.
