You will not be disappointed, you can easily sell for a profit. The ribbons I got are amazing at three times the price

Geez, gentlemen, quit obsessing over this thing. Once Chance starts collecting orders, the process will be open for a while before he closes it. If you check the thread once a week, you'll still have time to participate.

As for selecting your mic(s), don't plan for any of these mics to sound just like anything else on the market. The Chinese may be able to clone some of the major brands, but they aren't clever enough to get all the nuances right. So treat this purchase as a gamble. The mics are inexpensive enough that you can simply take a chance on one or several.

Hopefully everyone knows generally what the characteristics are of a ribbon mic, a dynamic mic, and condenser mics with small or large diaphragms. So armed with that knowledge, pick a mic that is likely to suit your needs and take a chance on it. If money is tight enough that you can't afford to take a chance on a mic that might disappoint you, then you probably shouldn't be doing this.

I was in Chance's group buy from a year ago, and I haven't regretted it. But on the other hand, the mics that I purchased haven't been overly useful. I bought them as an experiment, and I'm learning more as I work with them. But I knew that would be the case from the start. If my goals had been different, I might have selected different mics last year.

I was also a part of the second group buy - the one that fell apart. So I understand exactly why Chance doesn't want us to start making comparisons.

I haven't decided yet whether I'll participate in this one. If I do, I'll pick something that I actually plan to use this time. :D

Sorry man, I tried :o
Any news Chance?
Sorry if my "unbridled enthusiasm" is becoming tiresome... :o

Put a saddle on that pony. Spank it, leather boots, riding crop... :o sorry, different forum

I'd love to be a part of this buy...

This reminds me of the old Soviet Union--whenever a citizen was out and about and came upon people lined up to buy something, they'd jump in the line, then figure out what the line was for (owing to the fact that a line to buy anything was irresistible...) :)

Seriously, this is fun. I'm definitely interested; especially since I missed the buy way back when...

yup...the intense sense of one's place in line and the stiff upper lip, stern looks, subtle under-breath talking/comments about who's turn it is. Gentle but constant pushing. Shoving would never be tolerated and looking directly into the eye forbidden. It's the line that matters, there may or may not be a prize worth having at the end but at least you're in it and your place is well defined.

I know this well.

Parents were chech republic survivors.

The mics really are a good buy. I bought a few during the first purchase. Patience is a virtue, the boat is slow but the product just like the stuff in the stores.

It doesn't look like Chance is quite done with all of the specs, but it does look like the decision for me is getting a little more complicated...

I see that some things have been changing over at Chance's site...nice!

As things get closer do you plan on simplifying the choices? Right now there seems to be a lot of very similar LDC mics.

I would be interested if any of the SDC mics had extra capsules for omni.

I'm curious about that rectangular ribbon mike, the one identified as ACM-4.

I don't know from ribbon mikes--is there a specific model/brand it's trying to copy? Which one?

It vaguely reminds me of little microphones I had when I was a kid, that I used with one of those little reel-to-reel recorders (w/built in folding stand and on/off switch! :) )

Without getting into too much speculation, do a google search for "Dual ribbon microphone" and you'll find that "similar" mics are sold under a variety of brand names.

Help!

I am definately in for this buy.
I am having a hard time choosing because I dont know what difference the head shape does.

I definately want one for Vocals, so I am looking at the ACM-1.
I want a pair for intruments (guitars , mandos , violins), so I am looking atthe ACM-2 or 3.
How does one looking like a lollipop vs the r*yer look-a-like affect its function?

Am I making the right choices?
Help!

Tom

I'm looking pretty hard at the ACM-310 SDC. I was wondering if the tube was in a socket or if you have to solder to replace it? Also is the 6J1B-Q tube the same as the 6J1B? I couldn't find 61JB-Q tubes online, but I found a couple of places selling 6J1B tubes.

Tom,

I did a very quick shootout of a branded version that closely resembles the ACM-1 in comparison with a couple of other ribbon mics obtained in the last group buy (that closely resemble the ACM-2 and ACM-3), here post #11. I'm definitely looking to pick up a couple of the ACM-1 mics in this buy. I think it's a good vocal mic (especially if you remove some of the interior mesh surrounding the ribbon element) and I'd like a pair to use for overheads, too, as I found the detail and off axis response to be quite good in my tests.

will the ACM-583 FET have an option to buy a shockmount?

Thanks

Scrubs,
Thanks!
I think I'll get 2 ACM-1s and see if someone can help me get lundahl transformers installed tohelp.
That way I can use them for vocals and instruments.
