The ACM 1583 is a mult-pattern condenser. I don't have experience with this particular mic, but I'm looking at getting it too. My guess is that it would work fine for your situation. The ACM-13 is a ribbon mic, (which is I believe classified as a dynamic). These mics require a lot of gain. I don't have experience with ribbons, but my recommendation, if you're just getting one, would be to get something like the 1583, because I think it would be more versatile.

I guess it depends on what's more important---having multiple patterns or being able to shape the sound to suit your needs. You can severely EQ the signal from a ribbon mic and it will generally hold together. Do the same to the high end of any LDC and you'll get harsh peaks and troughs that sound awful.

Thus, I tend to think of ribbons as being much more versatile than LDCs. They're generally more tolerant of bad rooms, have orders of magnitude lower self noise (but they require a good pre---not super high gain so much as not noisy), and... well, get one and you'll see.

They aren't ideal for live use---they're a fair bit more delicate than condensers---but for studio use, I find that I use them a lot more than my LDCs, though I do find tube condensers somewhat interesting.

As for drum O/H's, it's really a matter of taste. I would use the 310.
Once I get the final information, and it's confirmed, just like last time, anyone interested will send me an E-mail with a code name in the subject header, then I will send a paypal request for the funds.
If anyone here is Photoshop savey, PM me

So, the 310, eh? ...Why is that (if you don't mind me asking)?

OK. I will need to know the secret code (& handshake :) ), when the time is right.

Did the ACM-12 & ACM-13 get re-named to the ACM-2 & ACM-3 or something? I swear that they were 12/13 yesterday. Damn ...I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue, I guess.

:)

yes, I too will need this secret code and handshake. If it is still possible that is  .

I wondered about this too and apparently it will be explained when the specs and other info have been confirmed :)

Like I said, I don't have any experience with ribbons. Looks like maybe I was wrong. It would be interesting to hear some more opinions. I'll be snagging one of these ribbons, so I can give a better opinion after this goes through. So, which mic do ya'll think is the best screamin' deal on Chance's product page?

It's no secret code, it will be a word in the subject header that I can quickly identify, thru all the Viagra and work at home trash-mail

Oh, so it won't be "penis enlargement", then?

:D

Acm-1

Chance,
I hope I am looking at the correct page, but I noticed some of the mics dont have any info on them.
For instance the ACM 1, is it a ribbon?

Since I am such a newb,...... on mics such as the acm2 and 3, since the specs are the same, is the only difference the presentation of of the capsule, in otherwords "the look". Will they sound approximately the same?

I am REALLY looking forward to some ribbons.
Thanks for your effort.

Tom

Some of the ribbons have the same motor, but as any mic, the size/shape of the basket/windscreen affect the charactor/sound/color of the mic.

i dunno about you guys but i'm checking this thread like 20 times a day :D!
NO kidding. Me too. It's a great way to spend spring break :)

I have the bbs sending me emails whenever a post is made to the thread. The lazy nerd's method of staying up the minute on the post.

Chance - are the other mics listed on your site, without specs or price, going to be part of the group buy? In particular, the ACM1 and ACM 240 (and does the 240 have an omni capsule option?) Thanks - sorry to bug you.

Question guys,

Who here understands these mics (I know Chance does but he's very busy) that could maybe give me some comparisons.

Example: I know the ACM-2 looks like a certain brand but will it sound like it?

Is it alright to mention other brands in this thread?

I'm really interested in the ACM-1 which looks like other ribbons on the market and I'm interested in a mic that would complement my TB1.

Any suggestions? Comments?

Thanks!

I should have all the specs updated by the weekend. I am very busy now recording "memorial day sales" for many different chain stores. There has been no comparison to any brand mics, but I think you will be pleased. I don't want to offend any of the brand names. You all can if you want, after you get them. LOL

Ah man, come on, compare them, throw me a friggin bone here. So many mics, so little money.

chance, will we be paying for the mics now, and then shipping when they arrive in the us, or all up front? either way, i'd be more than willing to get an order in now so that i don't have to obsessively check this thread every 45 minutes :)

Yeah, I am definitely interested in buying a couple, but it would really help me out to have at least a general idea as to which name brand mics each one compares to. I understand that they're not exactly like other mics, but a general comparison might help. As such, I have a suggestion. What if we get a group e-mail discussion started or something? People could e-mail me and I could compile the addresses. Then we could discuss which mics these ones might compare to.

I don't know if that makes sense or not, but it might work. Any thoughts?

I've got to go write a paper for school, so if you guys get to discussing this and decide that it is what we want to do, then you can start e-mailing me at paul_aarntzen [at] hotmail [dot] com and I'll send out the first group e-mail tomorrow. Then the thing can take on a life if its own, provided that everyone remembers to click "Reply to All".

Ultimately it's up to you of course, Chance. If you're not comfortable with this idea for any reason at all then we won't do it. It was just a thought for those of us who aren't as mic-savvy as others. :o

This was the gist of the great mic buy at yahoo. Apparently there was a mole who leaked the site to US distributors who contacted the Chinese distributor and the whole deal was nixed. So for my part, the less discussed, the better. The prices are rock bottom - you just have to take a chance (no pun intended.)
