That was the first track that I fell in love with on that album.
But, is it just me or does it sound almost too complex to play.
How the hell does he hit all those toms and still keep the crash going???

I think Grohl is an amazing drummer, like S.C.U.D. said listening to Nirvana
without Dave is quite a different experience.

jmproductions- Sure Nevermind's drums aren't all that stellar and from what I know were heavily processed,
but In Utero, now those are some DRUMS!

Yeah man, totally. The drum sound on In Utero is fuckin' crazy! HUGE sounding. Credit that to Steve Albini. I love the sound and feel of that whole album in general. It sounds so raw for such a major release and it fit Nirvana's style so well.... Much more than Nevermind did. If you notice there's like a 100ms slapback delay on the whole band except for the vocals. It just made the bass drum and snare sound gigantic!!! This arguement is kinda lame cause even if you ask Grohl himself he will tell you he's a minimalist and he deserves no credit at all as a drummer... How many times has he said that? Quite a few.

hey mmistudent, you mean slapback echo on In Utero?
From what I understand Albini used no delay/verb on the drums, just a whole bunch of mikes in the drum room. It's the same thing he did on a Breaders record and something similar on Chevelle's Point #1.

Okay, so I've read "Come as You Are" WAY to many times.

yeah, I guess he coulda done it with room mics placed fairly far away from the kit... It sounds like there's only 1 or 2 reflections though. btw I meant 100-200ms. 10-20 would give you a chorus effect. I also hear the effect on the distorted guitars though. Room mics on the guitars? sure, why not?

alright...

You would probably think different after you heard the same tracks before the drums were all triggered to death. I don't think it would sound bad, but the difference between a drum mix when hit replacement hardware/software is used is pretty big. The sound of the queens of the stone age is very sample/triggered sounding. Not that its worse, it just doesn't sound like pure drums. I would guess 50% of major label/radio/MTV music released today doesn't even have a drummer ever enter the session. On the other 50% of songs 49% of them have drum tracks that have been triggered to some extent besides some jazz (real jazz, not that light jazz elevator music shite)

well i can't say that i agree with this all the way... Yes alot of sounds are replaced, but not always triggered... I guess in a way it is still triggering... but your not using triggers, just gates and other software for replacing... but whatever that is a fine line, anyway, what i was getting at was that the replaced sound is still what he played, and i'm sure they prob. didn't try to "fix it" in the mix kinda thing, because it was done pro and i'm sure that is just his playing. He is a kick ass drummer and there is NO denying that. But also replacement sounds are generally added for ease and are only blended alot of the times with the real sound. Just for added tone i guess(and because people are lazy..), but if you record some snare drum hits or kick hits or something, and then place those in to "replace" it, it isn't really triggering... I don't think. haha. And i completly agree with that jazz stuff, i mean jazz. Holy crap! True jazz is some crazy stuff, and very good. Alright, enough of me blabing. ~Andrew

..That chick in the white stripes, now that is some terrible drumming.

just because someone uses fancy fills doesnt make them "good". A good drummer plays well with the music, Meg does exactly what she needs to do considering what she plays.... fancy chops wouldnt suit their music in the same way that Meg wouldn't sound good in Nirvana, or QOSTA................

... i think he should quit foo fighters and do qotsa full time, it really lets him unleash his percussive creativity...

he isnt in QOTSA anymore... he just recorded their album... Joey Costillo plays the drums for GOTSA now, just as well as Dave did.. if not better...

you guys are stuck in the 60-S. i wish grohl would get over that dotted snare hit 60-s beat thing he does . he also ripped off the beatles ticket to ride beat in his other band. you guys think this is all new stuff because you dont remember the 60-s. this isint fresh new measures hes playing! listen to the new disturbed album . grohl wishs he knew what a double bass was!

dude, grohl can do more with one pedal and one foot than the disturbed guy can with his whole kit.
And what's so fresh about the disturbed style? a guy playing double kick drum is about as new as a guy with a mullet.

Kind of an interesting comparison, a nu-metal guy playing really complex drum parts versus a punk/straight-ahead rock guy playing simple parts...

That being said, I'd have to go with Grohl -- the guy is an ANIMAL. Nirvana went though something like 5 or 6 different drummers until Grohl came along and just fit the music perfectly. The guy plays so hard and ferociously, it adds a ton of energy to the mix (perfectly complementing Cobain's intensity). He'll be the first to tell you, though, that he's no great drummer, chops-wise. He admits Dale Crover (briefly Nirvana's drummer) is a much better drummer than himself, but no one can deny that with Dave in the band, things just clicked. You probably won't ever hear much of him playing double-bassed, hardcore/metal-style drums (I don't know what he sounded like in Scream), but he really doesn't need to.

Is he the best drummer ever? No. Is he my favorite anyway? Probably. Plus the guy is a musical genius, one of those guys that just excells at whatever he puts himself to. He's not the best ever, but he sure is one hell of a drummer and one hell of an artist.

Did you know that 62.8% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

It's 59.8%, I swear, someone just told me that today.

what an IDIOTIC post. go out and buy "Probot" and tell me that again. listen to his Pocketwatch demos and tell me that again. listen to the first Foo Fighter record and tell me that again. hell, listen to the drum intro to "My Hero" and tell me that again.

Dave played drums on the first two Foo Fighter records; "My Hero" is a slightly complicated double bass part. it may not be Pantera, but it's tough to keep a slower time signature with a double bass with all the toms, hats, and snare going on as well. both Dave and Taylor Hawkins, the Foos' current drummer and Alanis's former drummer, use double bass pedals in studio and live.

everything dave has ever recorded has been with real drums, including with QOTSA. in fact there are pictures in the studio with QOTSA of dave on drums, and he happens to be playing a huge bass drum (at least 28", or so says the site with the picture).

GO Packers!!!
More championships than any other team in the NFL!!!!
We love the Bears here,a guaranteed two victories every year!!! :D

My Hero is a single bass song; if it's not, then I must be talented.

Grohl is a great simple power drummer for rock. Always accomplishes the most with the least amount of fuss. I wish more (local) drummers would learn that it's not about how many drums you can hit, but HOW you hit the drums you do hit.

I agree that most POP or HIP HOP tunes have MIDI drums which i think is just a cheap and easy short cut to churning out processed songs. There is a time and a place for MIDI or sampled drums, mainly dance/trance music or stuff like dj shadow or real experimental shit like aphex twin. Otherwise real drums should always be used in my opinion as they just sound so nice and naturaly acoustic. Its amazing the actual amount of diferent drum sounds are possible with acoustic kits.
Dave Grohl is very talented in all aspects of music. When he made the first foo fighters album he composed and played almost everything in the album. Thats impresive and with his drum skills also just makes him amazing. He has been in two bands that have influenced so much of the rock scene these days. I mean Nirvana! The Foo fighters had a big influence on the Emo scene with bands like biffy clyro. Even maybe influenced a bit of Slipknots new album with the singing sounding very Grohly.

No rock drummer will ever impress me

Now that bonzo's dead.

But there's some Funk Drummers I can dig

Zigaboo Modeliste
Jabo Starks
Dave Garibaldi
Clyde Stubblefield
The list goes on

You Punks and Metal Heads probably never heard of these guys, but they could kick some sick licks.

Josh Freese. Josh Freese. Josh Freese.

He is absolutely ridiculous. Drummer for Devo, The Vandals, A Perfect Circle, and basically everyone else. Mind you I'm not a fan of those bands, but he's an amazing drummer.

Some friends of mine went to an A Perfect Circle show. One of them was a drummer, and he noticed that Josh looked very odd while he was playing. Maynard proceeded to explain to the crowd that Josh had broken his right ankle or foot or something, so he was doing everything with his left foot. That is just incredible....

....yes I know the drummer from Def Lepard only has one arm.
