Just shows you that if its well tracked it doesnt take much to get it sounding good....
Exactly. Don't even think it needed half the FX I added. I could definitely remove the gates without a real noticeable difference, and the comp on drums is just a limiter to stop them clipping. Everything else makes a marginal difference, but it sounded great without it all anyway.

The results:

Trumpino
Pros: Pretty good levels overall. I like the one strat track on the right during the snare roll breakdown.

Cons: Rhythm guitars seem a little too midrangey/loud. Leads a little dry. Overheads maybe a hair too loud. No cowbell?

I think this was a cool little experiement. If yall wanna do another, let me know.

The Greg hath spoketh. :D

Thanks for the feedback Greg. This was a fun experiment and I got exactly what I wanted from it and that was to learn something and I definately learned a lot from this project. Hell I'm just glad I had some pros in the feedback you gave me. LOL. This was awesome dude. Please do some more of these contests like this. I'll enter everyone of them even if I finish dead last on all of them, I don't care. It is a great learning experience.

I use Reaper for a DAW and KRK monitors in a room that is square and absolutely no treatment at all except for a bed. This is going to be the next thing I work on, treating my room, or at least getting some good info about how to make it better.

EDIT: Dammit I forgot about the cowbell again. I was gonna go back and edit my link to have it but I didn't know how that would go over so I just kept what I had. Anyways I liked it in the song.

Thanks,
Trump

Btw philbagg, I tried that ducking/sidechain stuff, and man, I'm glad I don't ever need or want to mess with that shit. :D

I'm glad you don't need to either. You only track your own stuff, you know your setup, it remains consistent, you're sorted. It's just all too handy for guys like me who track other people, with other possible scenarios etc. I'm sure you can even admit that you'd see where it has it uses (which, alone, says something :p)

Trumpino1, I'm tellin ya, you're gonna want that cowbell.

I know, I love the cowbell. Is there any other sound that is more important. Thanks for the input 79_Les_Paul.

Another thing I forgot to mention was to a congratulations to Pandamonk for the win. I hope I get to this stage one day. And I liked everyones mix that I heard, gave me a lot of inspiration to get better at this.

We're the same, we both put our pants on, one leg at a time...

..The only difference is, when I put my pants on, I make gold records. :D

Hell yeah, that's right Phil. I just hope that one day I can put my pants on and finish a damned CD. LOL.

Hey,

just wanted to say thanks for this fun contest and thanks for the feedback, Greg, that's most valuable. It was definitely a great experience for me and even when I'm not in the top five, I'm glad I picked exactly those mixes in my earlier post, who were later to become Greg's/ez's top five. It seems that even if I didn't manage to mix it better, at least I can hear what's better ;)

As I'm not able to track something at the moment, I'm looking forward to future contests :D

Now fellas, I realize, it could have used a little more cowbell!

:D

Cheers
Tim

Useful? Maybe in gay dance music. I don't see it being very useful in actual instrument music unless you just want that pumping as an effect, or you really fucked something up during tracking and have no idea how to fix it with EQ. I dunno. It's not that hard to get clean kick/bass seperation if things are tuned/tracked correctly. I can see this as something that could easily be used and abused unnecessarily.

Greg can you just list the mics and equipment you used to record this piece please.

Greg,

I'm sure you're probably getting sick of this song, but don't give up on me. I tried like crazy to clear it up. Any better?

Definitely better than your other mixes. The guitars sound good. The kick and snare are kind of flat and lifeless while the toms are huge and roomy. That's kind of weird. The overheads seem a little sizzly. The levels are good for the most part. Keep working with those drums. :)

I threw out as much rep as I could to those of you who participated. :D

Greg,

Thanks for the help. These are the kinds of things I'm not used to listening for. If nothing else, I'm one stubborn S.O.B.. I'll keep at it 'til I get it right.
