I need to know if I am going about this recording thing all wrong or maybe close to right??? I have a four piece band that kinda' just came together, then we bought a bunch of equipment and voila we were recording stuff! Now I would really like these recordings to sound alot better and I think technique is our biggest obstacle. We play live all in a room together w/my vocal mic,the drum mics and a mic on the guitar amp and bass amp all pumping into a Mackie 1202 VLZ pro mixer, going to a Fostex X-30 4 track recorder. We have a Mackie M-800 PA pushing 2 JBL TR125's,this is how we are hearing everything as we are recording it.I know this system of recording has most of you cringing and smacking yourselves in the head right now thinking "Damn, what a pack of idiots!" I don't deny that, that is why I am looking for any advice on technique and rule of thumb I can get,and from what I have read in this forum thus far,I think I am in a mecca of musical knowledge that can provide the assistance I am in search of!PS:That was supposed to be equipment,I don't type very well!

It's kinda hard to give advice on how to make it sound better when we don't know in which way it sounds bad. :)
Describe what the problem is, or even better, put an MP3 of the recordings into the MP3 mixing forum.

Regebro,Thanks for the input.I personally don't know jack about how to get our music on an Mp3,luckily my drummer does know computers and recently had Cakewalk installed on his laptop, although he hasn't brought that into the studio yet!I just have a vague understanding of what that is all about.I guess my biggest question right now is the way we are setting up and miking the amps and monitoring through the PA,is this all wrong, should we be monitoring through stage monitors, headphones???To get a cleaner recording?? I hate to be so broad in my questions, but, with each question comes a broader understanding of the whole shebang for me!Thanks again and I will work on that Mp3 as soon as my drummer returns from his short hiatus!

One thing right off the bat, the way you're monitoring. Instead of monitoring thru PA speakers, get a set of headphones for everbody in the band. The mics are picking up what's comeing thru the speaks as well as the stuff you want them to pick up.

Track Rat,Thanx a bunch! These were my thoughts also! The recordings are not terrible by any means, they just aren't as clean as I know they can be with the equipment that we are working with.Upgrading our recorder from the Fostex X-30??Any suggestions,I don't want to get real crazy w/a top dollar best of the market recorder, just something w/more versatility and a little better quality.I just had a foundation poured yesterday for a new 24'x24'studio for us to play in,we are currently playing in the front room of my brother in law's house,I am hoping this change of venue for recording will make a big impact on the quality also! Thanks again!

Cool! Wish I had that! We have a little hole in the floor where the studio is. No way you can be more than three people at one time!

Theres loads of tips in the "Studio building" forum on how to build a studio. If you get the Acoustics good it will surely do wonders, at least for the drums.

I am pretty jacked about the idea of the studio,I feel sure I will be researching all the tips on studio building I can find in the coming weeks,I really want to get it right from the beginning, and not have to go back later and say "Damn, wish we would have done that different" Maybe I will have a better understanding of what improvements need to be made w/our recording technique by the time we get moved in there!
