Anybody remember this?

My Studio Construction Thread

I just sat and read all 25 pages of it (the completion pics are on p. 19 if you wanna skip ahead) and really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I finished it almost exactly 2 years ago, and I'm sorry to say that I haven't used it 10% of what I thought I would. No new bands, no CD, only a couple songs. Life's just been too crazy. I do work from home 3 or 4 days a week, and it's also my "office" so at least I get to spend time there. But it's been frustrating...

Now the biggest frustration of them all: I'm moving.

Bye bye studio. I built this house--not to mention the studio, and I seriously thought I would die here. But it's not to be. It's not the end of the world--obviously all the gear and instruments will go with me. Hell, I'll probably even take apart and move my beautiful desk. But I'm really having trouble imagining myself ever building something this custom again. The instrument mounts built into the walls. The wall panels; snakes built into the walls; the elevated floor to hide all the wires; the custom shelves and lighting. Shit! And now it'll be wasted as a storage room or a playroom for snotty kids. Oops--feeling sorry for myself there.

My house is a unique property--very large with tons of custom features (besides the studio, that is) and it sits on 25 acres about 40 minutes from the "big city." I'm pleased with the appraisals, but I've been informed by the "experts" to expect a slow sale given its uniqueness. So I'll be here for 6 months, maybe as long as a year. But my heart's not in it anymore. Just knowing that I'm leaving has taken the fun out of this room.

Anyway, it was fun reading the thread and remembering all the kind words you guys had for me while I was building the studio. That encouragement kept me going. Thanks for that.

If you need a hug, I hear wheelema's pretty awesome...

If you find you have gear that you don't have room for in your new pad, I'm happy to take it off your hands for nix as a favour. But only because I like you, OK?

1) No wheelie hugs. Not now. Not ever.

2) Depending on where I land--there just may be a list of leftovers. I'll keep you in mind.

What a bummer, I've always thought you have a beautiful home studio.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear that! But hey, maybe you'll get lucky and can sell the place to another music minded person!

So, first off... WTF?? Why the hell are you moving?? I love that studio... (Offline response might be better... )

Secondly, I have moved about three or four times since joining HR. I got to build new studios in most of my houses. I think you'll enjoy the challenge of a new place, deciding where.. and how... and motif.... You'll bring a bag full of experience and a little bit of wisodm on what can be improved. It's all good.

Best wishes.

:(

that sucks.

I remember "watching" your build as it went. Damned impressive, sir. I salute you.

Maybe a group (grope) hug is in order? :)

:D

Oh.....I'm crying. I remember this thread. I'm still new at this but I looked at those pictures and was amazed at the passion behind the build. Why is this happening? This studio is a work of art and every one of us aspires to have this in our homes. I don't understand why you're moving. Please tell me that you're moving up to something better (as if there is "better" than this). Please elaborate......

Bummer on the studio but......

I look at it this way. Familiarity leads to complacency in a lot of things in life. Stuff is taken for granted and the spark of the things we love can be lost. Changing things up can lead to new inspiration, take us down new roads we never thought we'd explore and keeps life fresh. having to start over forces one to ask what do I really want and how do I get there? what useless baggage am I carrying that is holding me back and can i jettison it?

take heart, embrace the change and see what doors it opens for you

YMMV :)

Good luck with the move Strat.
It's a beutiful studio you have there.:listeningmusic:

woah! you told me you were moving and leaving your studio, but I didnt know you were leaving that! I'd cry if I had to leave that behind, but on the plus and going back to what chili said, if you decide to make another home studio, then you will gain more experience and use experience gained from building this studio to make an even better one! (if possible)

man, i admire you, becouse you are not a lazy ass like me you actually did all that with your own hands, thats amazing you can be proud of that and life is never like we tough so we can expect that all the time, i just hope you can work some music, make some songs and have fun with the music.

Thanks guys. Yeah that would be cool--selling to someone who would actually use it! I'm not counting on it, but just to be safe, I won't do any deconstruction until after we've made a deal with someone.

Thanks Chili. Yeah--we can talk offline about why, but the short version is this: Our current place was a radical change for us. It's a damn ranch. Woods and acres and roads and outbuildings--gotta keep up on it all. But the bottom line is, Mrs. Strat isn't happy. She hasn't been for some time, but this place is my mecca, so I've been a little too self-centered to see it until lately.

What the hell, she indulged me, now I'll indulge her. Besides, no matter how much I love this place, I can't really enjoy it knowing she doesn't. And already I'm seeing the upside. All that ranch type work I described? That's 90% me! That's why I never have time to use the studio. So if I have to leave my little piece of heaven, I told her I want to make another radical change--one that buys us back a bunch of time.

So yeah, even though I'm leaving the studio, I'm gonna end up with a ton more time to make music--and that's more important. And for what it's worth, I'm confident that I'll end up with even more space for the new studio. I'm just pretty sure I'm not gonna do a custom build-out again.

WhiteStrat is moving on up - to the east side.

Finally get a piece of the pie?

...to a deluxe apartment in the sky!

Funny you guys should bring that up--that's exactly what I'm doing. I told my wife that I can't trade the work of this country lifestyle for the work of a house in the city. Sure it would be less, but I wouldn't have the passion that I do for my current digs. So how to do you not cut grass, or fix siding, or chop down trees, or grade roads? You buy a damn high-rise penthouse. Talk about a radical change...

I am really sorry to hear this, a lot of work and a really nice studio.

Thanks man, i've been watching your YouTube videos about your studio build (and yes, even the ghost videos!). It sucks to leave it, but I'll always have the experience of having built it. And I'll never lose the lessons learned, right?

Good luck finishing your build. Looking forward to hearing some tracks. Oh yeah--that snare (the first thing you bought for your studio!)--I love it.
