Well, here's my latest tune.

Really went to town with the back vocals on this one! Started out trying to write a kind of Bryds 60s tune, then turned out more like 70s pop...

Still a bug to work out here and there... Please tell me what you think, any and all comments appreciated, unless you plan to use the word "sucks" a lot... :D

 
Damn! I like this!

I think each instument is holding it's place in the mix very well and I dig your vox, nice harmonies and performance. Lead is tasty and has a nice tone, great delay on it.

I'm sure the pros could comment more on the mix, but if were my mix I'd be very happy with it.

Great song. Well arranged AND recorded. Loved the synth whem it came in at 1:05, also liked the lead in and lead break at 2:00.

Subjective comment - I wanted to hear more stereo separation between the various backup voices. Personal preference, but with headphones on, I wanted to hear them spread more left to right.

I'm amazed at how many really good recordings I've heard in this forum lately.

(listening with headphones on) Good tune, very catchy. The opening reminds me of "Ticket To Ride".

I hear some kind of odd phasey sound -- like there's a hole in the middle of the mix. (These kinds of things jump out at you when you monitor with headphones.) I took a short bit and reverse-phased one of the channels, then summed to mono. Huh? There's still a lot of kick drum there. Lots of out-of-phase bass. Funny thing is, the kick doesn't disappear if I sum to mono without reverse-phasing. I'm confused.

The mix sounds kind of dark to me. Looking at the spectrum (sorry, couldn't help myself!), there seems to be an unusually small amount of energy over 16kHz -- as though you used drum loops sampled at 32kHz. Maybe you were going for that warm 60's sound, in which case never mind.

The back vocals are panned left and right, but not hard left or right... I guess with the reverb and stuff they sound kind of too much in the center...

The drums are done with Native Instruments Battery. They're samples that you play from the keyboard.
 
Hey Don! It's funny, I played this for my wife last night (very critical) and when the intro guitar comes on, she starts singing.. "I think I'm gonna be sad, I think it's todaaaaay..." So she also hears the similarity of Ticket to Ride I guess! :D

I don't know if you heard the last song I posted, "My Wild Side", but people were saying it was too bright, too much top end. So before mixing this I was listening to a bunch of MP3s to get a feel for the eq range I should be using... I mastered it with T-Racks, which does kind of a tube warmth thing, and I rolled off the high end a bit. I don't know about the phase thing, I'm going to listen again today and check my settings!
 
Nice work!.....enjoyed this one a lot. Only nit I had was the lead git being a little too "in your face" compared to the feel of the tune. GREAT VOCALS!!....probably give this one a few more listens when time permits....I'll post more comments if I have any...

Don - I tried remastering this song a bit. When I had it in T-Racks I hit the mono switch, seemed to sound fine, quite a good mono mix actually. Then I tried the "differential" switch that cuts out everything panned center. There was still kick audible, but that's because there's a tight stereo reverb on the kick... actually I think it's real room ambience on the sample.

When I brought it into Cool Edit I ran the Spect-R Pro spectrum analyzer, and I saw a fair bit of activity right up to 20k...

I think you might be hearing aftifacts from the mp3. I did a true stereo conversion for the mp3 at 192k, with no narrowing of the stereo image or anything, but it's still compressed and there's bound to be some changes in the sound. It probably rolls off high frequencies it considers not audible too.
 
Yeah, the stereo reverb on the kick would probably explain what I was hearing. It just surprised me how much kick was left when I did the inverse-phase trick.
 
TONS of BYRDS influence - and right on the money. Sometimes I hear a tune and I say "I wish I'd written that" - this is one of those tunes.

The rhythm is the icing on the cake. You nailed the guitar sound, the total vibe and shit-hot vocals - but that bass and drum thing is the signature. They play together like old friends.

And did I mention those vocals? I can't help but be envious! I normally pan a little wider but I'd have them just this tight if I was mixing.

Some of the mixing pros may have some issues but this baby is nailed on the head in my not-so humble-I-know-what-I-like opinion.

It totally sounds like a modernized Byrds. Good stuff. nice full recording.

I could have done with out the synth in the background, but that's just me.

Nice! and yeah, I heard the "Ticket To Ride" in the beginning...but I think it's passable. You probably won't get sued:p
 
I think Ticket to Ride itself is kind of a ripoff of a Bryds song! I remember some interview with Paul where he said he asked George Martin if he could do that "jangly" sound like the byrds... ie; with tambourine and 12 string...

I might just turn that synth down a tad... it does get overpowering in parts... I just can't seem to get away from putting that 80s synth pad sound in everything I do!

Damn that's nice. Yeah a little less on the synth but great work. Oh, the guitar oicking pattern reminds me more of You Can't Do That with good share of Ticket To Ride as done by the Byrds. I think that's a good thing.

Very good work, my friend. Ever since I've known you, there's been nothing but quality coming over the border to my ears in Minnesota. I asked you long ago to put together a CD. I'm still waiting.

This is nice

I think I would like to hear less synth strings and more piano. The strings are nice, but when the cut out for a moment before the guitar lead(which is a tad heavy) There is a moment of very clear mix with guitar and piano--no strings----A very nice sound.

All these are being very picky. I really like the song and you really can just leave it alone, it plays well.
