Hey just listened to the latest mix of the song.

Couple things I noticed.

I like the delay/reverb on the vocals (reminds me of INXS)...but I do think it's a bit distracting. Maybe try running the vocal effects into an EQ and cut some of the highs to prevent them from being so present in the mix. Also, try adding a little reverb on the delays to blur them up a bit.

Also, I heard something goofy on vocals at about 2:30, like an Auto-tune kicking in or something. Might just be my work PC.

The song's really good. Vocals are REALLY good. Definitely Goo Goo Dolls-esque.

I'll try and dullen the verb and the delay a little. I agree that sometimes it gets a little too obvious when it shouldn't be.

The goofiness at 2:30 is me singing poorly. I cannot afford auto-tune nor would I ever like to use it.

And thanks for the comments and the review! :D

A little TOO much GGD perhaps...

When someone hears you for the first time, it is quite obvious that your main influence is the Goo Goo Dolls. From your melody to your voice inflection to most every nuance of your voice, it is clear that you're aping Rzeznik. I especially could detect striking similarities in chord structure in both songs. All that said...

You are amazingly talented!!!
But you MUST break away. You sound WAY too similar to GGD. Anyone who listens/ has listened to them much at all can hear it right away. And I've listened to them a lot.

I'll admit that I know next to nothing about recording. I'm just now starting to learn. And given the praise that has been heaped on you in previous posts, I may even be talked down. But the similarities turn me off, and make you INCREDIBLY easy to pigeonhole. Hell, I used to jump all over Rzeznik for sounding too much like Paul Westerberg.

Now. I should be receiving some recording equipment for the holidays. So everyone can expect some song postings from me. It's ok, you can trash me, I want you to!

Well, I know it can sound strikingly similar sometimes, but in my own defense, thats how I sing. Thats how I learned to sing... by singing along with a lot of people's songs, not just rzeznik's, but I can't help the fact that my voice or my tone sound similar to his.

What I can help, however, are the songs themselves. I've only been at this recording/playing thing for a few years now, and I know my songs are relatively simple at this point, but thats something I intend to improve on in time, as can be expected with most young musicians. BUT, i dont think I will ever completely break away from the style of music that I have now - the style that makes me happy, the style that makes me want to perform.

I guess, in some way, I am doing what Rzeznik did at first (sounding almost too similar to westerberg), but if you look at the two know, rzeznik's style is far from the westerberg style of yore. Thats called maturation, and it will only happen with time, and as my life changes, my moods will change and the things I sing about will change too.

All in all, I do what makes me happy. As a listener you have a choice to listen or switch to something else. If my style changes to something completely original, thats fine. If my style happens to be similar to that of the style that I grew up and learned with, that also is acceptable to me.

I think you are one of the most talented musicians I have heard, and your SELF is just that, YOUR self. We all sound like particles of this and that, but it doesn't mean it is because we have copied someone. DOG said I sounded like a couple of chicks that I had not heard before, so they obviously did not influence my sound. I am sure my sound is a mixture of all things I have heard, with the main portion being my own *self*, and I am sure it is that way for most others. You have your own style JaZZzzzzz. It does sound a lot like the lead singer of GGD, but it still sounds unique. Your voice could melt mountains if ice, in my opinion. The singer of the GGD does not do that for me. There is an emotion in your voice that is just that...yours.

Keep on, you will go wherever your dreams are led. :)

I am so frustrated that I cannot listen, and I miss being in tis clinic very much.

Thanks for listening and giving your valuble opinion! I really appreciate it when people listen to my songs and give me feedback - positive or negative. It helps me see things from a different perspective, which is always a good thing.

Keep the critiques coming!

YES! JAZZMANG IS STILL BANGING OUT THE TUNES.

Yay I really liked the one a while back "oldertest" or something. That is awesome.

i was gonna kind of agree with dingoman in part until i read this post, and actually agree with you. you'll probably remember first learning the guitar, playing the songs of your favourite bands, and for AGES everything you write seems to sound like them. i think tho that you will naturally progress away from sounding like other people. people used to knock oasis for trying to be too much like the beatles, but to be honest both bands are huge and both have enough fans to share and be successful in their own right and on their own merits.

i listened to every song you posted here, all of which had something about it that was spot on. even that rough demo of a new song you did - you have the voice and simlicity of acoustic guitar playing that just jumps out at you. you could sing down the phone and still sound good.

anyway - i've only just seen this thread today for the first time but i'll be following it as i'm keen to keep hearing what other tricks you've still got up your sleeve.

good stuff

*Hard to Breathe* is the one to open the door to destiny. If I were his PA woman, I would push that song so hard, that they couldn't breath until they accepted!!! :D

I would strive to keep the vocals as dry as possible without sticking out that much. Just a question of levels, eq, compression.
