Gibson Robot Guitar

I don't think it's so much about being able to. I use a boss TU2 to tune up because it's very accurate and convenient. I can tune it by ear, but the TU2 is more accurate than my ear is.

I like the idea about getting a super precise tuning and being able to spin the knob to B for example and within seconds it's tuned up and ready to go. Then if I want to go back to a standard E tuning, I spin the knob and I'm done...

I don't know about you guys, but I think that's bitchin' LOL

All the touring guitar techs in the world must have hoped that their bread and butter gig didn't go down the tubes when this first came out. The only thing missing was a 50' spool of string on the end that would self feed and then tune.
 
In a review in Guitar Player, the reviewer said that the Robot got almost in tune 70% of the time. That's NOT the "killer app."

hell, that's not even usable.
I can get my guitar very close 100% of the time.

I would never trust it to do it right. Maybe that's just me: my Toyota has a manual transmission, roll-up windows and manual door locks. Electronic gadgetry belongs in the electronics, not in what you can take of yourself. My ex-wife bought a new Cherokee in '99. It has about 91,000 miles on it now. The electric windows work only on the driver's door, the remote has long ago died, and she unlocks the door with a key, just like I do. All that money went down the drain, in my opinion. I expect the Gibson Robots will be like that, even IF they get them to tune the damn guitar right.

My 1970 Les Paul was exactly as good when I sold it earlier this year as it was in 1970, because everything on it was passive. There's a lesson there.
 
Gibson has the Robot LPs and Fender had (has?) the VR Strat. Both are decent guitars burdened with unnecessary doo-dads.

Kind of like BMWs, and how they morphed into testbeds for every fucking automotive gizmo on the planet.

Yup, had the VR strat, think it's been discontinued. I actually thought it was a cool idea though, and seemed to work better than any of Gibson's endeavours; FailBot Guitar, Dark Fire, Sex Panther (Dusk Tiger)...one has to wonder why Gibson has gone through at least three incarnations of it's 'smart' guitar.

For the record, the Dusk Tiger was slated in the last issue of Guitar Buyer, largely for construction issues. I guess costs have to be cut somewhere, but it's just a shame that auto-tuning machine heads come at the expense of a scratch-plate that fits flush with the body route :rolleyes:

The weird thing is, MIDI-equipped guitars are becoming increasingly fashionable - everyone has seen the new MOOG synth guitar, right? Parker have a new MIDI Fly out too....I blame Matt Bellamy to be honest.

That MOOG guitar costs something like $7,000. I don't think it's gonna get too fashionable. :eek:
 
They had a green SG version. I loved the color.

Wouldn't want the guitar though.

I think the list is actually something like $4,200....the Gibson list on launch was about $4,600. Very pricey for what is relatively unproven tech. Btw hows your antique LP working out?

The Classic Antique is holding up nicely, thanks. I plan on getting the frets dressed, as they were not crowned from the factory (the frets are like miniature railroad crossties :eek:) and even though I'm used to it, when I switch to that guitar from one of my others I have to think about it for a little while.
