I like the guitar coming into the center - gotta try that.

Real drummer mic'd up, too - nice job.
Got nothing to add - that's a lot better than I can do.

This song is being recorded on my home studio on the MS-16, 1" and a couple of M312B's.

I'm doing the vocals and guitars but, I am going to re-do parts of the guitar track as there are a few iffy spots that I want to tighten up a bit more.

There will also be some heavy keys added in parts to fill up the guitar cords a bit. I was thinking of a Deep Purple kind of organ sound to blend into it in the coming weeks.

There will also be some special spoken parts added into where it is just an instrumental. Basically news headlines from around the world on different sick and twisted stories over top of the music.

Those aren't real drums by the way. There generated from a yamaha keyboard and augmented with live playing fills on an Octopad-II. I will be re-doing the fills as well to smooth out a few off hits.

My buddy, Doug is on Bass.
 
Uh huh, the cymbals always give it away for me.

How do you like the MS16? How many tracks you got synced up?
You should pick up some cheap stands and a beginner cymbal set.
 
The MS-16 I use as a stand alone recorder. I don't sync it to anything. All the parts go direct to tape and from there to a Pioneer CD burner and that's it. A very basic but functional analog tracking set up.

Killer vocals, cant quite place who you remind me of... hmmm....

Before I read where you said you were gonna add some keys/organ, thats the first thing I thought of was some Deep Purple type organ.. good call...

The rhythm guitar seems a bit thin to me, for such a heavy song...

I like this though, it kicks ass!....
 
That old style rock and roll. Like it a lot.

The vocals are great - really ballsy. Reminded me a little of ZZ Top's Dusty Hill, or Bob Seger.

On second listen the chorus hook really stood out. Kept waiting for another chorus as a reprise but it never came. The song just kind of meandered towards the end. Man you gotta repeat that chorus to finish of with
 
This ROCKS! Lot's of energy going on here, it really kicks ass. I liked the chorus parts the best. Everything sounds solid on my end man, kickass tune!

I liked it to G, but I think another chorus before the big finish wouldn't hurt.

Instantly I can tell this is going to be rythmically very tight and well performed.

Vocal is both bassy and crisp in the intro with very limited sibilance, tell us about the signal chain and gear for the vocal ?

Beginning at 00:24, is this vocal doubling, or split tracks panned in the stereo field ? Because this works a hell of a lot better than doubling the vocal ?

oh yeah, at 00:57 I'm instantly in the groove. Good hooking lyric section here.

At 1:28 I would like to hear the instruments come down noticeably for a strong contextual dynamic effect, I think this could further define the 'chorus' for the listener. Also the vocal is very, very good here, it could shine more by standing by itself a bit more, perhaps just take the guitar down here ... Perhaps in the next chorus the instruments could still generally be lower, but more volume than the first chorus ? Perhaps just less compression in the choruses ... something to make it 'very different' than the other sections.

Nice harmony vocals at 1:28, knock me down, right up there with the best harmony-backup vocal mixes I've heard on this bbs.

That's a cool riff at 1:58, sounds like it has a bluegrass influence, like the Top and that ilk.

Understanding every word the first listen, maybe a few struggles, but I understand the stylistic 'bent' at this point, and am understanding that more through this bbs in general :D ! And when the vocal is mixed this well, this particular critique of mine is literally fogotten, as I am able to participate and enjoy the lyric, only later do I realize you need a compliment for this :D .

Through this section that starts at 2:24, I think we could stand to hear some wailing lead, that borrows from the melodic material of the chorus vocal perhaps, or something of that nature ?

All the way through to the end before the hooks out ... I want to hear something 'taking the spotlight', there's a lot of room left for development. There could be several cameos in here ... harmonica, room for some 'wurlitzer' ... even some horns.

I think some very aggressive cello in spots might be appropriate to add a little 'beauty' to this beast. Wouldn't it be cool to have a bow haired up with one of the 'Tops' beards, or is that a sacriledge of sorts, eh ? :D Do you have a long beard ? Do you have a gun :D !

This really sounds 'full spectrum' and 'radio hot' on my SONY MDR7506, sounds great on my 'Radio Shack' 30Watt Jam Box, and sounds awesome on my full system. Good job, I hear the experience here.

If you had to change anything, I would put more of the lowest of the low bottom end in, just a touch to give it a really powerful foundation ...

Fooled me on the drums too. I was gonna say you might have some phase issues with the overheads :D. Something about them cymbals.

Other than that - dang! Big sound! Great tune too. Nice playing and singing. This recording sounds considerably better than your other stuff which wasn't bad in the least.

Little quirk at 2:29. Can't tell if a guitar got slightly off or if that's a recording or mp3 conversion quirk.

this song is pretty ripping. reminds me a bit of clutch... sort of.

anyhow, i would grind up the guitar sound a little more, but that's subjective.
 
Nice hook... very suitable for the genre. Pretty decent recording. Some of the mix issues have already been touched on. A better guitar tone coulda really livened this up. A nice fat, chunky, classic 70's, southern-rock tone woulda made this thing kick.


(who thought those drums were real?? :eek: :p ;) )

Well!

Where do I begin?

Firstly a very warm thank you is in order to everybody who gave this work in progress a listen and contributed their wisdom and praise of what I and my friend Doug have accomplished with the track so far.

A very special thank you goes out to studioviols for his extra effort and analysis of the song and praise of my vocal efforts. It is much appreciated.

Regarding the vocal signal chain the studioviols asked about, it is a fairly basic one. I use an AT4033a Studio condenser, no wind pop filters, wired with a very expensive Monstercable straight into the TASCAM mixing desk and processed only with a mild 4:1 compression setting on a very cheap Alesis 3630 stereo comp. Some mild eq from the board only to raise up the 10Khz shelving about 4db and that's it! Straight to tape and little to nothing in the way of treatment on playback.

The Vocals were double tracked all the way through and panned hard left and right and a modest small hall setting on my Yamaha REV-500 verb for the entire mix out to the CD burner.

No compression was used on playback of any tracks. I only use it going in, while recording each part and that way I find I have far less to do on mix-down.

The comments about the guitar tone and playing errors are noted and appreciated as well. I wrote the song 18 years ago and back then, I was playing about 4 hours a day and was much more limber then I am right now. I do want to go back and re-do the guitars and give them the full treatment they deserve in the mix.

I hadn't thought about putting any violas into the track but, hey! You never know. I will give that some thought too in the coming weeks as we work further on the track.

The ideas raised about repeating the chorus is one I have been wrestling with in my mind as to weather its better to repeat a good thing or have it only once and make the listener come back to hear it again. I will ponder this idea further!

Really good effort here... boy... that li'l bit of tape really makes a difference as opposed to the digital sampling... the fattening/harmonic distortion is pure ear-licious.

Actually, I'm hearing quite a bit of Vince Neil on this... as opposed to Billy Gibbons... though that's in there, too.

Would like a louder ride cymbal... and real splash/crash :)

Nice song, btw... agree w/WATYF about the fatter tone needed on the noodly guitar... otherwise... just nitpicks left. Levels all pretty good.

Given that there's only one chorus in currently, there's not much chance of the listener getting tired of it. I strongly recommend a 2nd chorus because a) the hooks are really cool, and b) it will balance the song out. At the moment it's like a bike with one wheel
