Hey everyone, glad I found this site! It's like a treasure trove of knowledge.

Well heres the deal, I want to get serious now and start recording. To much messing around and not doing enough with my music. Now im tight on money and I just want to know how best to go about this.

This is what I have:
1 Laptop computer (HP DV8000) it has usb ports, ethernet ports, headphone and mike 1/8" jacks, an expansion port 2, SD-MS/Pro-MMC-SM-XD port.
3 Mics with chords
And me the sound source.

Id like to roll with a recording option for my computer. Just for now for I only need it to be able to handle 1 sound source. As I said I dont have a lot of money so right now I have audacity to use. Now I dont know how to get my microphones rigged up to my computer! With all these ports I dont know my options...possibly because im uneducated haha.
Can anybody help me with this setup? Or even if I can set a rig up with these options?
Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it ^^

It's a poor idea to plan to use your stock soundcard for any even approaching serious recording work.

For maximum value at minimum prices this --- LINK --- along with one of these --- LINK --- represent the lowest you should go.

Then if you want a big upgrade from Audacity, try Reaper --- LINK.

That USB thing is sweet.
I herd they have a delay of some sort of the though. Is that a problem?
BTW I forgot to add that I have a mixer.
Its a Roland VM3100PRO
That reaper program looks nice. Im gonna check it out

No.

If it's set up properly there's no (or minimal) 'latency' which is the technical name for what you herd about.

Awesome!
I ordered that part today. thanks so much for your advice. I read good things about that.
Now i just need to work on my technique.

Tauguy,

I'm completely new to this and
I have almost the same set-up as you:

Behringer Mixer (1204)
Mics with cords
computer with recording program (ACID 6.0)
that usb UCONTROL

but I have NO idea how to make it work, I tried hooking it all up but i just can't make sounds go to my computer, can you give me a walk through of which plugs need to be where?

Might sound kind of obvious, but again I have no idea what to do as I'm completely new to this.

Thanks so much in advance

Tauguy is away from his desk right now, but I'll be glad to help.

First, plug the Behringer USB audio interface into one of your computers USB ports.

Then plug your mixers left and right outputs into the left and right inputs of the audio interface. You may need RCA to 1/4" cables or adapters for this step.

Then plug a microphone into a cable and plug the cable into the mixer.

Then it's time to burrow into ACID. Assuming that USB interface is plug and play it should be recognized by ACID and should come up as an input, Put the track in record and you're good to go.

By the way --- why didn't you download Audacity or something rather than starting out with a $500 program that you need to be talked thru setting up?

And from now on, under the circumstances start your own thread. It's free.

I got it all working with audacity.

I just need to know how to set it up now in ACID, how do i make the input be the Behringer mixer?

What prefrences do I have to change?

Thanks for your help thus far.

RTFM means read the fucking manual.

I have Acid but do not have a Behringer USB audio interface or an external mixer so I can't talk you through the rest of the setup procedure.

It's in the manual, though you may need to do some reading to find it.

Awesome!
Thanks for ur help I just got the USB interface today!
But i have one problem...HOw can I assign it to reaper and get it into a track? Im trying to find it one the program but I cant seem too.
Thanks for ur help science!

Go back to the site you downloaded Reaper from --- LINK --- and download the 'users guide' and the 2 sample projects they offer.

.

haha
Thanks for your help but I last night I just stayed up till 4am figuring out the whole system ^^
It was weird though I had to go turn the usb driver and configure it outside of reaper cause it kept crashing. Maybe my comp isnt good enough?
Anyways I got the whole thing going on now and thank you so much for your help. Anybody who needs backup with this setup I got it on lockdown

Ah i spoke to soon! I have one problem. When I record something the only way I can listen to it is if I have the USB device plugged in... I tried bouncing it but I couldnt hear anything through my speakers on my comp. Can anybody tell me how to setup my computer to accept audio from reaper?

You need the USB device connected for both recording AND playback.

Figure out how to hook the USB device up to your VM3100 mixer and use that for all you monitoring needs.

Your laptop speakers are now useless.

.

What about If i want to put it on a cd? Or just listen to a song on my comp AFTER im done recording it?
The monitor thing is fine but when I bounce in i get nothing...any ideas?

I don't know what you mean when you say 'bounce in', but that Behringer USB audio device takes the place of the audio card inside your laptop.

If the stock sound card is still working to any degree, go to the control panel and disable it. Then all sound duties that the stock sound card used to perform will be handled by the Behringer,

hmmmm interesting...
But i think I figured it out. Ill have to use the line out on the USB device!
Thanks for ur help science guy
