What they got right is the marketing needed to sell a million of these gizmo's and if you hate modellers its probably becuase you too have already bought one at some point. Actually I'm a little dissapointed you can hardly find a guitar processor out there these days that doesnt have some kind of modelling built in to it because you often cant seperate your distortion effect from your amp models and these units often offer far less parameter options overall.
I have an old Digitech RP21 with a real preamp tube and almost every studio effect you can imagine EXCEPT modelling and I still havent found anything modern I like enough to replace it with a live amp. Its a bit more complex like a piece of studio rack gear to set up but is a much more rewarding finely tuned piece of gear to use for strait up guitar effects with a live amp.
